diff is used mostly on high wing designs to reduce drag on the down aileron. it is not really needed or used much any more on aerobatic style planes

Many aerobatic airplanes use differential. Just depends on the model. Your Cap 232 probably needs differential, but you need to go out and test it. Go up high and do a downline. Hold aileron and make the airplane roll (not fast, but not slow) without any other inputs. If the airplane barrels around the canopy, reduce the up aileron travel. If it barrels around the gear, reduce the down aileron travel.

Scooby,

I use differential to get good rolls in uplines, downlines, 45 degree lines and horizontals. That covers all of them. However, I do other trimming first. Pitch trim for straight and level, rudder trim for straight and level, aileron trim for straight and level, rudder trim for uplines (mix as needed); engine thrust for uplines, throttle to rudder and elevator and aileron mix on downlines as needed, rudder to aileron and elevator for knife edge mixing, then finally differential. CG adjustments prior to this as well, then differential. Do just as 3D Seth says.

Back from the NATS, it was a great time, now on to sailpanes, 3D, foamies and family time, yes, sounds good, family. Branwell want to go to CT?

Cheers,
Don

Also the Goldsmith technique works well if you are trying to figure out which way to put it. Its a great writeup in the Hangar 9 Diamante instruction manual. After you do everything above, pull to a 45 upline and just put in aileron. If it starts going one direction, give differential (opposite aileron more up). Do it like I say in the video for upline trimming- right to left pull to 45 and left to right pull to 45. That way there will be no weather vaning effects (i.e., if it comes in both times its weather vaning, but if it comes in once and goes out the other way, its differential adjustment).

One note- on my Comp ARF I found that I had too much reverse differential (note its top hinged and instructions say to give more down than up on ailerons). I ended up very close to zero (same up as down). Same for the top-hinged Brio plane I flew in pattern.

Best to you,
Culpepper in Oct,
Don
