Any Goldberg Extra gurus out there?
I recently bought a Goldgerg Extra that was built from a kit. It is the best craftsmanship I have ever seen. It is red, white and metallic blue and it looks identical to the original scheme on the box. The cowling is built right into the airplane with the lower half removable with two screws. There is a raised up ply motor mount with blind nuts already installed and the cutout for the head and needle are already made into the wooden cowling and there is also a tunnel for a tuned pipe built into it. The way this airplane is built it looks like he intended to use the Cadillac of engines. I want to use the same engine the builder used when he built the airplane. The needle is not slanted. I will try to post some pics soon. I don't want to alter the holes that are already made because the finish looks perfect. Any ideas what his intentions were? |

My first Extra and 1.20 size plane was the 68" Goldberg. It flew very well with a Saito 1.20 four stroke. I chose the plane for the engine because it was the smallest 1.20 offered at the time. However mine did not have a wood cowling, it came with a very heavy THREE piece ABS cowl. I may have replaced it with an aftermarket fiberglass cowl I can't remember but I was big into doing that back then. This may be why this one is wood.

My friend had one of the old kit built ones and it had a super tiger 90 in it and that would hold it in a hover and have some pull out if you propped it right

I think I'm gonna go with an outrunner and A123 pack. Thank you for your suggestions.

I flew one for a long time with a YS120. I soft-mounted the engine, and it was very quiet.
Flew excellent. I miss that plane. Wayne |

I have had several of these...all built and ultimately crashed by yours truly. Back in the day...a YS 1.20 was an absolute beast on this airframe. All 3 of mine had YS 1.20's.

I had them all (still have a 300 in the box). I had the Sukhoi 26 with a Y.S.140 and an Ultimate with a Y.S. 120 Did he do the BÜCKER JUNGMANN too. Never had one of those.

YS-120 / 140, can't go wrong, jsut make the control surfaces larger if you haven't built them yet. That's the combo I learned to tourque roll with after watching QQ at the 1996 TOC. By spring of 1997, I had it dialed and thought it was really something. That was a great plane, finally sold it to a guys who just "had to have it". Have fun, they're great flying planes.
