Default What is an Old Fart?

Guys,
I have noticed the use of the term "Old Fart" frequently in quite a large number of posts. I started thinking about just what qualifies a person to be an old fart. After going back and re-reading some of the posts, it would appear that the context used varies for post to post as to exactly what an old fart is. Does this term refer to a person when they reach a certain age, is it based on how they think, what they think, what they fly or how they fly?
All this got me thinking again, wondering if maybe I had somehow earned this status. I started flying R/C in 1975 just after my 19th birthday (you do the math) and have been active since. I currently fly a gasser and attempt to practice IMAC. I am not very good at 3d flying but enjoy watching it done by guys that can do it. I think 3d flying requires a certain skill and talent that I admire. When I have an issue with a certain setup, I ask one of the 3d (kids). They seem to know their planes to the nth degree.
So here is the $64,000 question (showing my age again)...just exactly what definition elevates a person to this "Old Fart" status?

Calling people kids is a good start.

Well since I was 25 when you started flying I think you are just a punk kid............

I think that it's got more to do with ANY person's state of mind, I have seen many times that fliers, no matter what their age seem too criticize any thing they don't understand, or can not do.

So too me anyone who calls me an ol' Fart better have a smile on their face or be ready for a life lesson...........(meaning a whippin) I mean I earned that title and expect a little respect.......but any ol fart like us knows that.

Bottom line we are all in this sport too have fun, and if they can't do that with out crying about others trying too do the same,.......... they need to try something else.............JMO.

Bob,
I still have the profile Ringmaster my Dad bought for me in the PX at Orly AFB near Paris, France back in 1957. It still flies and maybe I'll push the OF envelope this weekend and go fly it!

Well it's a hard to explain definition. We have a 90 year old man at our club who gets out there and flys and haves fun watching people do 3D hucking.
And "Old Fart" pretty much keeps to themselves until you fly a certain way then they get real upset and try to make stupid rules such as "no stationary maneuvers over the runway" or the infamous AMA rule "You can only touch the tail wheel to the ground"
They mostly hate kid flyers.
That in my opinion is an Old Fart.

Age really has not much to do about it. It can happen to anyone who has been in the hobby longer than you've been alive. Lol

Yea, but ya can't really call a twenty-something an old fart. At that point, I think words like smart-ass or douchebag become more appropriate, but old fart behavior is seldom practiced by the younger pilots...
