The sucker flies. Took 3 clicks of up and that is it. seemed to be nose heavy with out the cowl. Don't know if it's the drag without the cowl so I'll put the cowl on for the next flight. Engine ran good. Turned 6980 with a Xoar 22-8. That's not to shabby with only 10 oz of fuel through it. It now has about 20 oz. through it. I'll check the RPM again at the end of the next Flying session.
The plane flew very stable and easy to control. I only flew it for about 3 minutes. My friend Bob took the plane up and trimmed it and landed it. I did do some roles and some 1/2 throttle loops and it looped straight and the roles were the best that I have dun to date. I'm looking forward to flying this plane with a broken in engine. I cant even describe how happy I am with the plane. I only flew it once cause a servo arm came loose on the aileron. I need to go over the screws to ease my mind and make sure that I didn't miss anything else. I didn't take any loctite to the field with me. Thanks for all you guys' help. I'm not finished with the plane yet but I have had a great start |

You will probably take that trim out when you put the cowl back on. Also your tuning may change slightly as well.
I normally tune the engine with the cowl off to get it close. Then fine tune with the cowl on then do the maiden. I've found that with the cowl off things are just too different.

I'll have to find a way to get to the needle velves. They come out right in the middle of the firewall. Will have to see if I can get to them with the canopy hatch off. I don't think I can get to them with the cowl on. |

Congratulations, Tom! Can we see a picture of where your carb needles are? You may need to drill a small hole in the cowl to access the needles.

Here is the new and final version of the firewall and the needles.
I know about drilling a hole for screw driver access, I just don't have a screw driver that small and 20 miles long to reach it. He He. This thing is huge. The real problem is that this is not the final engine in this plane. I hate to put more holes in there than I have to. It's to pretty.

I make my screwdrivers out of metal rod and a wheel collar. That way you can make it as long as you want.

I'm sure I can come up with something that will work. Soon as I crash from the High I'm on. |

You can buy a thin, long flathead screwdriver or make one as Sweetpea suggests. Trust me, a small hole in the side of the cowl is no big deal, especially considering the alternative of having to take off the cowl every time you want to tweak the engine needles. I had to drill a hole in the front of my big Edge cowl for the needles; not fun to do but I am very happy that I did it.

You can also put some alum tubing from the motorbox so it guides the screwdriver to each needle. This his how my P-47 is done.
