Steve,
I would definately pin the firewall, its a simple procedure that will give you peace of mind. I pin the firewalls on all my gas airplanes regardless of size. |

Steve, pinning the firewall may not be completely necessary, but it's a personal preference that I like to do. Ken's 36% Edge with a DA-85 is not pinned and is holding up fine, but to me it's better peace of mind when dealing with the vibration of a gasser engine. I use short wood screws and medium CA to pin my firewalls.

What Ryan said. It only takes about 10mins to do and lasts the lifetime of the plane!

Well I have a question.
I was wondering whether to close of the pipe tunnel as I wont be using it, to stop air flow from going down the airframe. As I will be using a Pitts style muffler. And I was thinking of closing off the openings around the engine box. Any thoughts as what folks are/or have done??.. Thanks,Steve |

No need to, but if you feel that you must, some Ultracote over the openings will work fine. I am not using the cannister tunnel and have not sealed off the openings.

Same here, I'm using a pitts muffler also and didn't close off the tunnel or the motor box. Like Ryan said, if you are going to do it you can use ultra/monocote.

I sealed mine off the Su-26 with depron. I only did it though to keep the smoke out of the fuse.

I covered mine with 1/64 ply. Mounted it with #2 screws. That makes it removable. I also glued a 1/64 ply heat shield on the bottom of the motor box cause I have the throttle servo and batteries mounted there. I did it to make me feel better and keep the exhaust residue from the break in oil from getting up inside the fuse.
