Oh I am buddy, I still have few things to do prior to prepping the surface for covering, but I hope to wrap that up in the next couple of weeks. I figure it will take me a week or so to prep for covering.

by preparing for covering , you mean sanding with 2000 grit, then fondling it till it is nicely burnished, that right?

Bob you have definately been an inspiration.

I just got a first generation Cap 580 new "in the bones". From what I can tell it has balsa sheeted light ply sides. Solid all the way.

From watching your builds I guess I'm gonna throw caution to the wind and start hackin' as soon as the house is done. Well, this mod anyway.

My question is would I not be screwing up too bad if I just start cutting out the squares between the formers on the sides ? Seems like if I get too much somewhere I can just put some back. Leaving in all the "other wood".

Are there any diagonals on the top and bottom of the fuse box?

I've been watching this thread for a long time....like most I guess. I've always pondered this question:
With this ultra-light build technique...are there any flying maneuvers that would be too hard for the airframe? Like a mid throttle snap? Maybe no waterfalls or blenders?
I'd assume tame 3D like harriers, hovers, t-rolls would be just fine.

The red and black 40% Carden in the last pictures I posted was built in 2006, with the same lightweight construction, it has 500+ hard flights on it with full power snaps, 3D snaps, blenders, waterfalls, pop ups, and more. there are some other aircraft in the area built this way that have been put to the test as well, so I don't think it will be limited, in fact, if it is going to break, then I am going to break it.

Did you ever decide what you were gonna do for the cover scheme?

Well I thought I did until I looked at the colors together I wanted that are availible in Monokote, and I hated it.

So I am still undecided at this point.

How heavy was the 40% Carden in the pcis?

Obviously you know way more than anybody else about light building, so I am more than happy to take your word for it.

This is really intriguing though.....and will be a big game changer. Effectively...what this means is that we've been flying planes with extra weight for far too long for no clear benefit.

I hope aerotech makes some sort of "in the bones" or quick build kit or semi-arf type of version for those of us who are weak in the building department.

The Carden in those pictures is around 28.5 lbs. and flys on a DA 100 with stock exhaust.
I will have to let the Matt or Kevin speak on the subject of prefab or not.

Not on the top but between each former on the bottom there is an "X" plus a stringer down the middle. And stringers in the corners, top and bottom. Maybe I could add a brace between each former on the top and be OK.

Upon closer inspection I don't think the sides under the turtle deck have light ply. The whole side is sheeted in 1/8 inch balsa sheet. Forward the turtle deck it has the light ply with diaganal bracing in the ply plus the 1/8 inch sheet.

If you were to place diagonals on top and bottom, you can pull alot out of the sides, go back and look at the Just another 260 on a diet thread, that was the 35% H9 I reduced to 22 lbs 13 ozs. Take a look at the fuse, I think that would be helpful.
