I waited for years to finally get a sim - got the Real Flight and was very dissappointed. To me it is not at all like real flying but more of a video game style flying. I hardly ever use it . After paying $200 I got only one or two actual planes I would fly , then you are supposed to buy add-ons for $100 ea. No thanks.
Lots of game type flying "fields" . Just my opinion... |

flyingfoam it depends on what it is your trying to achieve. If you want to lean the basics of flying and orientation then a flight sim will be of big help to you. If you expect a real model to fly like the sim version then your gonna be disappointed. Simulators are ideal for learning the basics but you have to make considerable adjustments come the day your in the field. Case in point....the hover in a sim is easy to do and easy to maintain. Now try it with a model.......and thats your answer. |

Yeah but don't forget its not a real flight simulator like NASA or the USAF use its more of a tool for learning. Also the add on packs and updates are free from the website. |

After reading comments for years it sounded to me like some guys actually fly sim to learn new maneovers etc. After using one it seems to me to be very limited in that arena . I'm sure I simply read more into things than I should have.
Shyte, "expansion packs" cost $33 ea. and there are 6 of them . Only "free updates" I saw were from 3 to 3.5 and 4 to 4.5 . A "for instance" to me would be trying to learn flat spin ... you can only go "up" for a limited time and you always run into the sun and get turned around and lose where you are. Just as someone else said, hovers and other manoevers are way too easy and VERY difficult in real flight. I just feel a bit dissappointed to find it seems more of a toy than something real ... |

I have flown several of the sims and pretty much every plane needed to be tweaked to fly more accurate. Is that a bad thing? Nope...The end user has tons of control in many of the sims when it comes to how a plane flies.
The most realistic flight simulator that I have tried is this one. But it costs a bit more than RealFlight.

dougpeck Just one more thing I wanna add and this is just my opinion. The smaller planes in realflight are closer to the real thing than the larger ones prolly cuz they are more twitchy like small planes tend to be. So if you can do what you want to do with a range of the smaller sim models then I believe you've a very good chance of doing it with a larger real model and a darn sight easier. As for sun you can do what you like in the environment settings to change that. You should give it a second chance its not like real flying but its not a million miles off it either. I've flown some of the trainers before and I swear they feel just like the trainers I used to fly. |

I got in love with the hobby 30 years ago but in my country it was really really expensive so I couldn't start on it until I was very lucky to get in my hand a RF Sim 2 years ago and that was Wonderful! I experimented and learned a lot with it at no cost (of crashing) So then I started saving money and buying my TX and started building and flying. For those like me a sim was our only door to RC Flying. Now I use it daily for learning and training, specially 3D flying and love it. It's just a tool for the Real thing but for me it was the most important tool.

the 3d yak can be tweaked to fly pretty close to how a 40% plane flys. move the cg back, reduce the ail throw and set the sim to advanced. for flat spins or wing tip spins fly further out as you can't fly very high over your head. you really don't need the add-ons.

Put it this way, if ya fly the Yak in the Sim and crash it leave yours on the bench for a while.
![]() I know some who have gone straight from Sim Flying to a trainer and was ready for an "upgrade" on the RC model after one day at the field. As far as learning new moves I consider it a invaluable tool in that respect IF you are not there already ANYWAY. It will not help me land or do any basic stuff anymore. I still can't fly a passable rolling circle on the Sim much less my models. ![]() However if I ever should have enough time to get it on the Sim I am sure I would be closer to doing it with the Model ! By the way my Sim was the first Dave Brown edition. I now have G4 but I will only find time to mess with it in the Winter I am sure. One reason is I am addicted to flying giants. See the thread on posting addiction.
