So what is the RDRC Fly for Tots Charity Fly-In?

It's Raleigh-Durham Radio Control's annual Fall "fly-anything" event that brings together hundreds of pilots and spectators for a weekend of wide-ranging RC fun while raising money for a children's charity. The site is RDRC Field north of Raleigh in Youngsville, NC. Here's an aerial view of the site from the 2008 FFT event.

What charitable organization will be supported by the 2009 Fly-for-Tots event?

In 2007, RDRC chose to support what was then called the "Victory Junction Gang Camp" (now just "Victory Junction). This is a camp for chronically ill children that was started by NASCAR driver Kyle Petty and his wife Pattie to honor the memory of their son Adam, who tragically lost his life in a racing accident. You can read all about it at www.victoryjunction.org. When we visted the camp that year to present our donation to Kyle and the staff, we were all overcome by the realization that this was precisely the right organization to support. It was an amazing experience to see what they do there! We were changed forever and are driven to help these kids through this event.

In 2007, we were fortunate to donate $17,000.

Then, in 2008, with the overwhelming support of our RC "family" and the local community we raised that number to $26,500!

What will 2009 bring? We are all putting our hearts and souls into making it the best Fly-for-Tots ever and, with your help, maybe we can raise the bar again!

Man, I'd like to go to this! This sounds like a good time for a good cause. I'll try to talk dad into letting me use his truck and the trailer, or at least fly down.

Matt, you're right. It's a great thing when we can enjoy flying together and help kids at the same time. We hope you can make it. It will be good to see you again.

So how does the Fly-for-Tots raise this money for their charity?

By making 100% of the event proceeds go to that cause. First, the RDRC membership steps up and volunteers tremendous effort toward the many preparations prior to the event and then to help run it. Second, we have many gracious local business and hobby industry sponsors who support us through financial, material, and/or manpower donations. The sale of tickets for the raffle of many sought-after prizes, including an awesome grand prize (we'll detail that shortly!) makes up a great percentage of the total charitable donation. Third, all pilot registration fees, food concession profits, etc. go directly to the donation. ALL OF IT!

So, the ultimate way you can personally help the kids at Victory Junction would be to show up, register, fly, eat, buy raffle tickets, and enjoy yourself. Wow! By having fun doing what we like to do, we will all help make life a little better for some "special needs" children. That's a marvelous thing!
