Default Made in USA Wild Fred 36 inch Electric Combat Plane

Hi all,

This is a build thread for the Wild Fred 36 inch electric combat plane that is an ARC made in Ormond Beach USA.

At the Chattanooga 3D Jam we donated a couple (WrongWayRc.com is the distributor for this ARC) and also flew there.

In this thread we will assemble and fly one, and hopefully get a few up to mix it up. The plane if very much fun for combat or just buzzing around at about 60-70 mph.

So you might ask, who or what is a Wild Fred. Wild Fred is a guy by the first name of Ron who lives here in Ormond. Past accomplishments extend into full scale and hobby shop ownership. He is a builder/designer with some 20+ years experience. This plane was designed by him back in the begining and has been popular at clubs around a few states where he was located. (also shipped from his store)
The most curious thing is that he can scratch them out about one every 1 1/2 hours and the plans are in his head. I go over and pick up a dozen at a time and they are all the same size/weight etc.

First step, cover with your favorite covering. Most people do some bright colors so you can see it better when in the mix. Also, because of that lots of people like to use red and yellow. How much fun could that be if 4 guys are up and all planes are the same color?

Start with the elevator servo. Measure back about 4 inches from the rear of the end of the fuse to find a location to cut in your servo. You want it back as far as you can in the tail without having the servo touch the other side of the fuse. If using an extremely light motor setup the servo can also be placed more forward but remember, shorter control lengths give less bending in the wire on the push maneuvers.

Use the supplied Popsicle sticks to back up the servo location so your screws will grab some wood. I found it easier to do this step before the tail feathers were glued on.

You will need a servo similar to the Hitec HS-55 with around 18-22 inch ounces of torque for your two servos (rudder is optional) and you will also need two 6 inch servo extensions, one for the elevator and the other for the easy plug in on ailerons.

Basic setup would be like a Hacker 20-20 or any of the Extreme Flight small 12-20 amp motors. The setup you will see in the vid to come is the KDA A22-15M outrunner which is a 1050kv 20 am motor.

Speed controller appropriate to your motor.

Battery, a 3 cell lipo again appropriate to your motor in the 1000 to 1350 mah capacity rating. If you are acquiring new batteries try to stay with the higher C rating because most of your combat flight envelope is at or near WOT.

Try to cover up to your glue areas on the elevator. IF you cover the whole thing then cut the covering, be VERY careful not to score the wood. The slightest score can, and probably will cause a failure when pulling the high g combat moves. You can see that I covered up to the area, then taped them so my glue dont run over on my covering.

Use Epoxy, thick CA or Gorilla glue on your elevator and check alignment as you would when assembling any plane.
