Default How do you guys avoid getting burnt out??

Man..... I'm just having a tough time with RC right now. I knew I would get burnt out by XFC time, but after that, I didn't try to fly too much. Except for a XL 60 whirlly gigger, and maybe a couple of foamies........ So, I jump back out with the 35% 330 and start getting bored with it again. And now, just a week ago, I drop in my 35, to the tune of it needing a new motor box(possibly), hatch/canopy, and cowl. I'm just so frustrated and few up with the whole deal that I have seriously comtemplated selling everything off.

I do have other things I can do to fill the time in where RC is. I have 4 wheelers that haven't been out all year. I work with a local band here in the Dayton area. They play hard rock, and are awesome!! It is just too bad that we don't have a better following. We have a few things in the works on changing that around. And I do have a girlfriend. She wants me to do what I want, and doesn't complain when I went flying. I just got her on the buddy box last friday!!!

I've been at this gig since 1990. I started competiting in the early 90's. I had a huge speed fasicination. So I started with Pylon. Flying Rossi's and Webra's. Then I got into the Jett's, and then jumped into the 428 class. But I still wasn't going fast enough. So, I bought a Q40. I was going fast. And then 1999 comes around, and I get a flight on a friends 40% 3W ship. I decide to change things up some. So, I buy a GS'er in 2000, a 32% 3W 330S. That was all it took for me to go big!!! Flying this IMAC stuff, and then getting into the 3D stuff. I had more fun flying 3D than I did IMAC. I still enjoy the 3D stuff. I think I've reached a plateau, while most everyone else has gone up 2-3 levels. Even in keeping up with the 3D stuff, you have to go out and practice stuff......

I pay for all of this myself. I've had a little help along the way, from a few vendors. In which I'm extremely thankful of!!! I have a decent paying job, with all the normal stuff that I've got to pay for. I am a home owner. Vehicles are paid for. CC's are all caught up. College tuition is not paid for. 1 quad isn't paid off. Plus the monthly expenses that come with home ownership. So, all of that is a given.......

So, what do you guys do to avoid getting burnt out???

its pretty obvious imm obsesed with atv mx and imm just a competitive person (just not at spellig) so every now and then i get kind of mad and burnt out when somone flys better than me but ive only been flyin for less than 2 years i learned on the simulator so i can rip it up with 3d and all that stuff torque roll on the deck all day. so what i do when i get in that negative attitude i give it up for a few weeks and just ride ride ride. then when i cant walk very good ill start thinking about planes again and the bigger picture, that being the fact that we dont just do this hobby for the planes we do it to meet people we wouldent meet otherwise, right?
on another note have you ever been riding at breezewood in pa? that is my favorite place to ride man. maybe we could meet up out there sometime.

I'm not sure it can be avoided. I go through it too. Problem for me is that i get burned out right after making huge purchases on multiple planes and engines etc. So i always have alot of money sitting around doing nothing. Its like having a constant hobby store in my garage. Mabey thats my problem who knows. I definatly get overwhelmed when the rc projects start stacking up. I should just have one or two planes instead of 10 of everything. The guy that used to run my local hobby store had to walk away from it. He said he was so burned out by the day in day out part of it that he never wanted to fly anymore. Now that he's out of the business, he fly's all the time. I think it can become too much if we let it.

Well i gave up for 5 years once cuz I felt the same as you do Boxed all my gear up got rid of any models I didnt like much and went onto para gliding. After 5 years something just clicked and I got the bug again.
You cant fight what you feel thats gonna be counter productive.....just move on to what you like after all its is only a hobby.

Take my advice though. When you give up for a long time be prepared to pay s^^t loads out to get back to speed with current specs. LOL all my stuff was donated to the Smithsonian after just a few years.

Yep agree 100%. I work away most of the time so not much to do sept look on the internet and jerk around for the trip. When I'm home I'm either building, flying or looking online for new stuff. Too much of this is deffo gonna burn me out.....................But the winters coming so I can build some more

I got out if it from '89 to '95. And your right it was alot more expensive to get back in to it, and of course i got back into it more than ever. I too have taken up paragliding a few years ago. A good friend of mine instructs and got me to try it. We do alot of ZAGI flying as well. I fly foamies and Zagi's alot still. Just not into loading up the trailer for the big stuff when it's 112 outside. The heat is a major turn off for GS flying for me.

Winter time where i live is perfect flying weather. it never snows here. Im 110 miles north of Las Vegas in the desert. Everyone starts flying again when it starts to cool off. This time of year you only fly from 6:00 am in the morning to mabey 10:00 am. Then it just starts to suck! Good for thermaling in the evenings though. Somtimes we sit in the trucks with the A/C on and take turns chasing thermals, or go up on a big ridge where it is windy and cooler.

BUnky, riding is most excellent. I used to ride everyday. I sold my dirtbikes and my banshee a few years ago when i got married. I wish i had them still or some new ones. I think diversity is key to not getting burned out on any hobby or sport. I bought a Harley a couple of years ago but i am burned out on it already. I just use it to save on gas anymore. I wish there was a magic answer to not getting burned out on the hobbies we do, but i think moderation and diversity is key.

122?? no thanks, been that hot once or twice. Thats twice to many. I feel for you if thats what your in right now. Thats hot enough to make farts implode. I grew up in Virginia and know what the 99% humidity is all about. That one of the reasons i moved out west for a change. The higher temps out here were not so bad for the first ten or fifteen years but now it's starting to irritate me. I need a summer home in cooler weather.

What about building a scale project? Advancing your building skills when flying sucks? I am going to try to build a kit (40% Aerotech Sukhoi, I hope) and see if that helps during the winter blahs. This has been the worst year for flying that I can remember. Not much time during the week and the weekends always seem to be some kind of weather event. Rain threatens, wind blows big and gusty....

Bunky what about doing something else less uhm serious in the same hobby like ......I dunno gliders or similar....anything thats easy without too much care and no worries about the consequences if the plane dies .......I know I feel a certain amount of hmmm concern when I take my best models up. Was just thinking this might re kindle the flame if you haven any concerns....make it more fun so to speak.

I'm waffling on like an old woman .....I'll go drown myself now

Nah, you have a good point. Gliders like Zagi's just bounce if you pile them in. You pick em up and chuck em again. I have been thinking of build instead of flying too but if i am burning out on the ARFs then? Fishing is good.

I'm getting burned out too. The day was the first time at the feild in 7 weeks. The only reason I went today was to maiden a plane that It only took 9 weeks to put in 3 servos. Stayed at the feild 6 hrs and flew 2 times, the rest of the time I just watched outhers fly. I like to read and talk about planes, but when it comes to flying or working on them just not interested. My wife wants to know if I'm sick.
