Default Red Bull aircraft mods

I noticed some of the Red Bull guys are starting to do a few more mods. Paul Bonhomme has a lowered and narrowed canopy and turtle deck thanks to Jon Sharp at Mojave. He also did a new cowl too to cut cooling drag. Glen Dell is running a new modified Slick 360 this season as well. (White and blue #45).

If it weren't for the wing rules I bet there would be some very interesting stuff out there right now.

Of course they do. The Redbull is a race, not a acrobatic event.
If I flew around an RC field, going on edge for a split second a couple of times, doing a
single loop and some fast turns, would you say Im an acrobatic flyer or a racer.....
I really like to watch the "races", but that is what they are.
I personally would rather watch these guys, Patty or Sean do a routine, but thats me.
It does not surprise me at all that they will end up look like Reno racers with enough rudder to
hold a quick on edge maneuver (oh yea, and 15 Gs!!!).

I wouldn't think the mods on Bonhomme's edge make it any less capable of competition or airshow aerobatics than a stock edge. It still has a stock wing and tail. What does suprise me is the fact he can still see well enough out of that small canopy. I have sat in a few of the Reno F1 class birds and you can't see %$# out of the darn things. Talk about landing by brail.

Red,

I was talking about the type of aircraft. An Edge or Extra were built for aerobatics, there are special planes built just for racing and they are starting to make these planes look more like race planes and not just aerobatic plans.
Now that I think of it, why does Red Bull only use Aerobatic planes? If you look at the Reno races, they have planes like Nemisis that are built for one thing, going fast.

Yes, anything to save a few 1/100ths of a second. The wheel pants have also gotten to the point where there is only a couple of inches of tire sticking out. Last season, Kirby Chambliss showed up at a race with a smaller diameter tire and the officials made him change them for "safety" reasons.

All of this reminds me of the old Nascar, when teams were trying everything the rules didn't say they couldn't do. Now it's just dull circle racing with generic cars.

Those Redbull air race pilots are highly skilled and slightly crazy. The Edge 540 is the plane of choice for most teams. You rarely see an Extra in the series. More of the full composite planes such as the MX2 are now included.

I always liked the idea they had with taking airshow planes out and racing them. not takeing racing planes out and racing them. that is what reno is for.
its like going to a local hometown drag strip and watching the local guys with cars they hoped up alittle and hope like hell they dont crash b/c thats what they drive to work each day vs go to the big rag strips and watch the rail cars shot down the track. both very cool but I am much more in to the home town cars.

I wish they had a rule that they had to be a completely stock aircraft. That is really kinda how it started any way. season one baby!!! its like whta the UFC has done. it used to be nothing more than a bar fight and some BAD @$$ guys kicking the crap out of each other. seems like it is getting to hollywood now. like wcw or something
still fun to watch though

ummm... take a look at the intakes again and tell me that thing would not over heat in a second if you were not hauling butt.

Actually, it won't overheat at all. I am involved with one of the Biplane class racers at Reno. It has intakes smaller than that and won't overheat at all. It's all in the design of the ducting. In fact, when our cowl and ducting was first installed, we could not get it up to temp.

Put more aero into the event with the race and they will be forced to leave the plane stock

You just said it will not over heat at all. You work on one in a reno racer............. What I was saying is if you take a edge with that small of intakes and go let skip stewart ring it out it would probably over heat.

I could be wrong though I would be really interested to hear from a full scale aerobatic pilot on his experiences

I totally agree with you.
It would be more fun if they added some snaps, a double hammerhead, upside down turn, etc...
