Default 67" OMP Fusion build/electric conversion

hey FG!

I wanted to post up some pics here of the newly schemed fusion 67 arf from the fine folks at OMP! This bird is the cleanest flying slab I personally have flown..knifedge with zero coupling, tight snaps, and everything else you would want out of a precision aircraft with the added ability for full fledge freestyle 3D. this is not my first fusion, but the timeframe that passed when i did'nt own one left me wishing i still had one flying.

I recently assembled this bird and powered it with a saito 125. it had excellent power with this combo, but i have started converting all my planes to electric and the fusions turn is next! i'll get mor into my setup in a little bit..

quick info:
Wingspan:
67"
Wing Area:
1000 sq in
Length:
66.5"
Weight:
7.0 - 7.5 lbs
Engine:
.61 - .91 two-stroke
.91 - 1.20 four-stroke

direct link: http://ohiomodelplanes.com/67fusionarf/index.htm

lets get started.. i'll post this part quick since it's now done minus the e-conversion.

hinging has been pre drilled/slotted from the factory. the supplied hinges fit nice and snug... not to mention the gapless hingelines

notice the rediculous throw thats available

here is a point the manufacturer missed. the servo hole needs to be drilled, along with a slot added between the front and rear of the wing tube on one side of the fuse. this process is not listed in the manual, but was very easy to tackle.

here is how the servo wires are ran in the fuse. a generously sized wire tunnel has been built inside the fuse plenty big enough to pass the 3 servo wires through. the rear rudder servo has its own channel that leads up to the 2 forward mounted elevator servos.

now to the new powerplant... and camera lol!

I went with a Neu 1509/2.5D with a 6:7-1 gear box.
the controller is a castle pheonix 80
the packs are 2x 25c 3S 3700's wired in series

I just finished with modding the wings to accept the lipos in the leading edge on the underside.
i dont care for batteries hanging off the nose, so i opted with this route..
i cut back the sheeting and built a pocket in each wing half.. see below for pictures

Andy, do you plan on having vented covers over the batteries or just leave them open? Can't wait to see the final results on this one. John Drake did one of the OMP Fusions electric and used a Hacker motor and 6S pack. Performance was pretty good and overall weight still around 7 1/2 lbs.

I like the way you modded the batts into the wings!!! Wish I would have thought of that when I did mine.

The build is looking great Andy! I also liked the wing mod for the batteries. Can't wait to see her fly. It's looking like you could get some pretty good deflection on that elevator! lol! Sweet!

I plan to leave them out in the open like they currently sit. On my EEv2, the wings have an identical mod and airflow/lift seems to be unaffected by it.. so i dont think covers are necessary other than being astheticly pleasing on the eyes.

i don't know what my AUW will be, but i am guessing around 7.25 is where it will end up. even at 7.5, it would be ballistic power on this combo. i'll be swinging a few different props at first. a 16x8, 16x10, 17x8 & 17x10.

I fabbed up the motor mount yesterday evening and now all thats left is to mount/drill the angle blackets and bolt the motor in. i'll post pics this evening of that process.

i plan to maiden it this weekend, so when i do, i will get a video of the performance

thanks for the compliments fella's!

i got it done! the watt meter just gave my the numbers..

with a xoar 17x8 E series, it produced 1566 watts at 70A. this equates to 208.8W per lb., so not too shabby for 3D! i will also try an apc and see if we cant bump up the numbers some. 1750W @77A would be ideal

pics to come shortly
