Research, testing, authoring by:
Reza Gholamipour Dear Flying Giants Members and Guests: Here at Flying Giants, we don’t settle by just anything when it comes down to improving our planes in every way! I would like to share with you what I promised sometime ago. As many of you may remember I showed DA85 and MTW RE3 and how good that combo worked! Now it’s time to show the RE3 and DA170 performance as I promised a while back! Reason for the delay is I worked on some new cool products with MTW that I will show later when the time is right so that took some time away from showing this, although I have popped in different threads and have given you the header length you need to use for DA170 but there is nothing like showing it! I spent lots of time and tested 3 different header lengths and finally settled for what you will see in the video. I tested 3 different header lengths on DA170 and RE3, 11”, 12.5” and 14”. 11” header is an absolute NO NO! Engine gets really warm and mid range suffers! Performance does not stay consistent through the flight! Heat builds up and performance drops! 12.5” header was much better but not quite as good. Mid range was acceptable but not perfect and engine still would run a little hot. 14” header is what you will see in below videos! Engine is so tuned at full throttle that you only hear the vibration of my plane and sound of the prop ripping when it passes you (see low pass), it’s like an electric motor! Mid range is awesome and engine temp stays down! Performance of the engine in the first 2 minutes of the flight is the same as the last 2 minutes of the flight and improves the RPM on broader prop sizes, although I don’t have access to many different props but it showed that way on the three props I tested! One thing I would like to ask you to keep in mind is this the optimum length for keeping a healthy mid range and increasing top end RPM. To me MTW RE3 has given me something that I never could experience with tuned pipes in the past! Meaning enjoying 3D while increasing power as the mid range was really picky! My plane weighs couple of ounces over 42lbs and the combo I show in the video takes it from hover to space while accelerating, with minimum to no rudder correction to keep it straight! True meaning of over powered airplane, I try to be very careful how to use the power so I don’t deteriorate the airframe immaturely! Please don’t hesitate to comment or ask any questions you may have. I really hope this helps you guys with similar set up to fine tune your power system and enjoy them more! I will just briefly state what I have in the plane and the details that are talked in the video: DA170 MTW RE3 MTW flex header 11”+3” extension (DA sells them), 14” total header length 1/8” gap between header and pipe AirModels 31x12 H needle 2 1/8 out L needle 9/16 out Servos 8711HV RX JR1222 Duralite Li-Mn 3000 2s2p AirModels 31x12, 6600-6630 RPM Mejzlik 32x10, 6085-6115 RPM Best Regards, Reza Gholamipour reza@giantrcsupport.com

One more thing before I sign out for couple of hours, you can watch the videos in HD that is much better quality and bigger screen size! Just click on HD but you need to have fast internet connection otherwise it takes a little time to load!
Have fun and thank you for your support! |

Reza, this is great work and verifies exactly what I learned on the 85 when I employed your suggestions on header length there. Many have asked me if I thought the 14" header length would work on the 170 and now there is documentation to emphatically say "YES!".

Wow Reza, that is power? should I use 1/8 gap between header and the pipe with my DA-100 re2 combo?

hmmmm... I am not familiar with the RE3's.... are they tuned pipes?? or just a cannister???
I wonder if the longer header length is allowing the overscavenging but reducing the "Super CHarger" effect by allowing the exhaust port to close before the reflected/heated wave can re-enter the combustion chamber....???? Reza... any speculation you have on this??? http://www.giantcircus.com/two-stroke_c.gif Last edited by Mithrandir; 08-18-2009 at 03:12 PM. |
