Default The Bay City Fliers Double Dalton Build

Well it's nice to have a thread going on the Giants again. One of these Mel's is for a man you might not know but the other one is for a man we all know. The first one is for Butch Hall. Butch flies in the intermediate class in IMAC. This will be Butch's second Mel and we won't talk about what happened to the first one.RIP.The second Mel goes to the one and only (I WON'T 3D MY IMAC PLANE) Monty Huff. This will be Monty's first Mel and is looking forward to finishing no lower than third in every contest.
Now, I've made some changes to the Mel that I will explain as I go along. The first one is to the FSS (fuse side support). As you can see I have made the lightening holes smaller in the front where the wing bolts on. As per some conversations with a couple of pilots, the lighten wings are causing a little more stress on the fuse than before so I added a little more wood in the front for strength. I also changed the motor box top. I changed it to a single hole big enough to get your hand in but stronger than the original. These were breaking due to props or spinners flying off or due to heavy vibration. This should solve this. I also added four pieces of triangle stock to the inside corners of the motor box for added strength.
Now,just so everyone is clear on this. This is in no way a slam on Tony Russo or Dalton Aviation. The stock version of this plane is fine but the modified version that we all have seen from myself and different builders has caused extra stress on the fuse and it needed to be addressed. These mods should solve the problem.
So without further a due. Here is the thread. Enjoy and don't hesitate to ask question's.

Thanks for the pics, Rob...can't wait to get her in a few weeks! Got the DA 170 well broken in on the Yak and ready for the Dalton...it is really screaming now!

I sure hope this one will last a lot longer than the one I bought from Matt Mikesh at the Nall this year! It was no fault of the plane just my fault for not having enough down elevator throw on the 3rd flight for pulling out of a 45 degree negative downline on the figure "N"...that mistake will NEVER happen again!

I better buy Monty a couple of bottles of rum so he can cover the his new MEL, especially after he's been working so hard on recovering the Aerotech! It's been really quiet at the field for the last few months without him there...better make sure you DON'T give him 3D throws!!

Without getting into words I can't spell very well, Lighter wings cause the plane to rotate faster causing more stress to the side of the fuse. I will get a very good friend of mine to explain it better in bigger words. It didn't make since to me at first but after a brief explanation it made more since.

Rob, you do a great job in the modifications and building, thanks.

Have you work out the self deploying trash bags in the tail yet??

You know these two, they may need this modification, one of them is a 3D maniac!

Interesting mods Rob. I too in the past have experienced some minor issues with fuse integrity when using lightened wings. For instance I had a stock Extra 300 I flew for a year with no problems. I then modified the plane over the winter with lightened wings and when I flew it with the new wings I broke nearly every cross-brace over a 50 flight period. No doubt the lighter wings are harder on a fuse. Luckily for me I have about 500 flights on my Dalton with lightened wings and no problems to speak of.

Lighter wings allow the plane to accelerate faster (than usual) in the roll axis. The added stress is due to this rapid acceleration (and deceleration) in the roll axis. Heavier wings accelerate more slowly acting like a damper of sorts (ever run an engine with the wings off???), not putting as much stress on the fuse sides. Most of the cracks would probably occur at the bottom of the root rib because as the plane stops (or starts) suddenly in a roll, the fuse side wants to continue to rotate (or stay at rest) and the fuse side will crack where the stress is the highest, which is most likely along the bottom of the root rib.

Stocks not fun. Change is good. Well in some cases. That's another story. You have to give the customer what they want, not what you want to give them. Sometimes you just have to adapt to the changes.
Thanks Ryan for the input.

I told Ryan not to use the big words so he wouldn't have to say it twice. I heard you where still stuck on that composite stuff.
