classclown: made a mistake on an earlier post. its an ef extra that i have on the building table. anyway, still haven't decided on a motor. initially was thinking dl111 but the plane is just a little bit too pretty to put a china motor so might be going with a da100. we don't have any noise restrictions here so will go with stock mufflers. aileron servos will be 7950's since there is only 1 servo slot per wing. elevators and rudder will have 7955's. i will be using a spektrum ar9100 powersafe rx powered by 2 fromeco 2400mah LiFePO4 batteries. ignition willl run on 2600 LiIon running on a Fromeco regulator.

One thing i have been pondering on is weather to go with MTW cans. As mentioned above, there are no noise restirctions where i fly. Will the extra rpm's do me any good with the added weight of the setup?

i'm back in manila and the edge should be here by next week.

Hello,

I would seriously be careful with one 7950 per aileron if they are as soft as the 5955 at the neutral position. I must say I don't know the 7950 but with other Hitecs I would be really scared of fluttering with one servo per aileron.

If you're using only one, I'd highly recommend a 8711.

Regards,

Sascha

I dont know about the rest of you guys but the HS-7950's are the way to go, the JR8711's need gears 40-50 flights they get sloppy as shi and at +40.00 for a set of gears it's not hard to choose. Does anyone know about the gear life of the 8711HV are they the same thing????

Hello,

The problem with the 8711 and others is the bearing of the 2nd axle and how it's mounted in the top of the case. The outer diameter of the bearing is only about 5-6mm (with a height of maybe 2) and so the pressure between the bearing and the case gets too much for the polymeric material. After maybe 100 flights (and almost only at the ailerons on my planes) the axle can move and the gear gets sloppy.

When I'm right (didn't use it by myself so far), the 8711HV has an aluminum top. Then, the problem should be finally solved, because the compression strength of any aluminum alloy should be much, much higher than of any polymer.

The gears of the Hitecs last longer, but only because their dwell-moment is much weaker (try to move the surfaces at neutral position and compare) and there definitly are a lot of problems with full-composite-planes in connection with Hitecs.

I asked Andreas Gietz for an official statement. If you use only 1 servo per aileron of your CARF Models Edge 2.6m, we STRONGLY recommend a JR 8711 and you MUST use 30g of lead, glued into the counterbalance. We can't give you any warranty in case of aileron flutter in connection with other servos, because they are not tested far enough in connection with the Edge. That - of course - doesn't mean, that they're bad servos!

So, if you want to use Hitecs or other brands, please take two for each aileron to be 100% safe.

Thanks,

Sascha

Sascha,

The guy that delivered the plane to me also recommended to use JR8711's. I too am not much of a fan of JR servos because of servo slop and prefer Hitecs over them. I will go with the 7950's on this plane just to be sure.

As far as using two servos per wing, it seemed like there was only servo slot on the edge. i could be wrong though.

hi rick. i will be getting my plane on wed. spinner size is 5". wheel size is 5.5". Yes there was an instruction manual but it looked like it was for another 2.6M plane. Every page on the manual was laminated though and was a nice touch by the CARF factory.

classclown, we're alright, we were lucky and not even a single scratch. i'ver been helping in relief efforts and this is the forth day. i'm supposed to pick up the plane today but will hold that back for a while. a lot of people need help. so far i was able to pack 900 bags of instant noodles and canned goods with the help of neighbors last night. this should help 900 families to get by a day or two.

Back in 1972, I remember a typhoon that poured rain for over 22 days over there. I remember seeing floods all over the place, but nothing like what we are seeing in the news. Good luck and stay dry!!! Steve

Is the Edge available without the stars and Edge-540 lettering on the wings? I wish CARF would make these an optional decal set for their planes.

They have it in plain white with a red bottom for a hundred bucks less.

It's available in All White, you can order it directly at the website.

Or you can ask your Rep for a custom scheme, leaving the starts and letters out will be absolutely no problem I guess.

Thanks,

Sascha

I could have sworn the white one had a red bottom. I guess I have been too tired this month or something.
