Got an e-mail from Rich today. He can make a Slim Zlin or any of the previously kitted Hanson models to order once the funds have been received. I am getting my quote with shipping to I can get my Slim Zlin on the way.

That is great! Any chance you will do a build thread?

Got an e-mail from Rich today. He is laying up the molds and will have it boxed up in a short while. As far as a build thread goes that might be fun to do.I have never done one and I usually take a long time to build. 3 young children and a full time job suck up alot of hobby time, but if everyone is patient I would not mind doing it. I will post some pics of the kit once I receive it.

Ditto on the lack of time, 3 kids, job, etc taking up every waking moment. I would just love to see pics of the kit when you get it. I could care less how long it takes to build it! Post pictures and your impression for posterity's sake! I think it is really cool that you bought the plane.

I will go over the river and through the woods to my parents' house for Thanksgiving. I will be sure to get my Dad's Zlin out to the flying field and get some pics, and maybe even video, just to keep you motivated.

If you do a build thread on the Zlin, I will do one on my Runaround. Deal?

Deal!!!!!Right on! Sounds like fun! I would love to see the pics of the Zlin and vids would be over the top. I will post some pics once it arrives and give my honest impressions of the quality.

This is totally weird. I'm about half way through construction of a Slim Zlin and was looking for covering schemes when I came across this thread. I've built two Runarounds over the years and have a large winged runaround started. Though I actually prefer the small wing versions better (I think they are prettier). I bought the slim zlin kit from ebay a couple of years ago, the instructions are dated 1989 (I'm generously calling them instructions as they are really 4 sheets of paper with some sketches). I'm planning on a ys 1.10 for it. I've come full circle. My first real pattern plane was a runaround, then I moved up to 2 meter planes and now 10 years later, I've decided the Runaround size planes suit me better than the 2m planes. Easier to build, cheaper, easier to transport and much tougher (if you put torsion bar landing gear in the wing).

I am in the middle of refinishing my floors and rearranging my workshop, but as soon as I can I will find my original construction manual for the Zlin/Dalotel and post a scan of it. It should have a few extra pointers for you. Of course since you built a couple of runarounds in the past you already know what is in store.

The new Zlin from Great Planes looks great, I love the color scheme. George Rodriguez from GP drew inspiration from his childhood memories of the Hanson Slim Zlin to design that one (G_Rod, hope it is OK to tell that).

Mike, did you receive your Zlin kit yet?

BTerry,
I would really appreciate the instructions, just for knowing the CG if nothing else. Your right in all Dicks planes are similar builds. This one came with the round servo cutouts already done and cutouts for the retracts. So far I've sheeted, capped, cut out ailerons and elevators, and before work this morning I glassed the wing and stab center section. The other plane from this era that I'd like to get is a Jupiter. I had a 900 sq inch version that I thought was about the prettiest pattern plane ever designed.

Please post pics, Mike! Maybe start a seperate thread for it. We don't care if you do a build thread that takes 3 years to complete. It is fun and informative to document the work.

Jeff, I agree the Jupiter was beautiful, and even more incredible in person. As I recal Dan Hines of Carolina Custom Aircraft was going to make a mold and start kitting the plane again. Don't know when/if that will happen.

My Runaround is similar to your Zlin, it was skinned and prepped by Dick personally. Mine has the wood fuse, also hand-built by Dick. Old-school build quality through and through. It is a college-level course in wood airplane construction techniques.

I will be able to look at it this weekend when I get some time. I will definitely post some pics. After that I can start a build thread. I found a smokin deal on a YS 91 FZ so that is the powerplant. Once I get a look at the kit I will decide what exhaust I want to run. I would like to have some type of pipe to cut down on the noise. I know central hobbies sells a couple different headers and pipes that might work for this application. I plan on using the old school design with the improvements of new technology (digital servors, 2.4, lithium batts) I really am excited about doing a build. I have been fooling around with ARF's for too long, it's time to get dirty again!!

Nice find on the 91FZ, that is a perfect engine for it.

I would just scrap the whole pipe theory and run a header without the muffler. The YS is quiet enough without it. Don't believe me? I bet you wouldn't be able to hear it at full throttle over an idling 100cc twin...

Modern accurate servos will make a huge difference as well. I remember our "newer" Zlin had the then-new Futaba S128 standard servos in it, the first we had with the "J" plug. Looking back those things were slow, sloppy, and inaccurate compared to even cheap digitals like the JR 821.

As promised, here is the manual. I need to rescan the rudder plan as one page instead of two, but this is a good start.

Sorry I haven't posted any pictures yet guys. I had two deaths in the family over the last two months and have been busy traveling. I am currently building a new work bench so I can have a good place to start my new projects including the Zlin. I want to do some type of build thread, never done one before but there is a first for everything. What I can say is that I did look at the kit and the glass work was very nice. It has all the panel lines and rivits molded in already. It looks sweet. I can't wait to get started on it.
