Default DA200 Baffle Pictures

Attached are pictures showing the baffle system for a DA200 mounted on a Carden 126” Extra being built for Rick Byrd (his second). Rick and I are currently flying Carden 126” Extras with DA170’s on MTW RE3 pipes. Both planes have significant power and authority on the up lines, however, Rick wanted to try the DA 4 cylinder for his second plane.

Several DA200’s are starting to be used so I’ve been collecting information & pictures from others on how they baffled their installations. These pics probably resemble a setup that Walt did for Larry Arseno (sp?) the most. This installation may be different though in that the entire baffle (horizontal and vertical plates) is integrated into one piece and easily lifts up and over the motor for removal. It’s not mounted yet but there will be a spoiler on the bottom of the lower cowl to create a negative air pressure to help pull air through the upper and lower chambers. This technique is being used to cool the open pipe system on our current planes and has proven to be very effective.

Dean, did you have to move the firewall back any?

We just got one on Bill's QQ and should be flying it shortly. I will see if I an get pics of it, the baffling is very similar to yours.

Looks good , I may be building this same combo very soon, I can't wait to give him a big goose egg for sound - LOL

Hi Dale,

Yes, had to cut 2 1/8" off the front of the motor box to accommodate for the extra motor length. Funny comment about giving a goose egg for sound. Seems kind of ironic doesn't it? Spend more, score less....

Yeah, he ran the engine on a test stand, sounds awsome. I just can't wait to hear it in the air, it is a little loud on the ground, we will see though.

May have to make a Y pipe to go into a can or pipe. The trick is making them equal length so it runs right.

Sorry I missed you guys in Abilene, sounded like I missed a good contest. I am planning on going down to Houston later this month so I should see you there. Would love to fly the big one if we have time.

That's what 3W does to run cans or pipes on their quads, I don't see why DA couldn't come up with something. Just gotta find cans/pipes big enough I guess now. Maybe MTW is working on some RE4's or TD150's right now...

QQ ran 4 pipes on his bipe at clover and the shootout. Had foamy power. I'm not planning on running cans or pipes. I throttle manage pretty good, so I'm not too worried about sound. If the times comes I have to run cans, I cross that bridge when i have too.

I can't wait. I flew a 3W 150 4 banger at the TOC on a plane I borrowed from McConville. Loved the sound ever since.
