Default 747 super tanker video

I bet the pilots love their job. Glad that Evergreen Aviation finally got all the red tape cut, and the forestry department finally recognized the value.

12 min of low level 747 footage here:
http://www.oregonlive.com/news/index...47_supert.html

About the aircraft:
  • 747-100 (yup, it's a really old plane) cargo plane w/ nose load. Still used for cargo when not fighting fires.
  • Flies at min 500 ft above ground during drop.
  • 20,000 gallons. Can be dropped in a line 3 miles long or in sections. It is a pressurized, not a gravity delivery system.
  • JT-9D-7 turbofan engines. 40,000ish lbs thrust each.
  • T/O weight w/ full load of water/retardant is lower than design max T/O weight.
  • Flys at ~150mph while making drop.
  • Pilots report no pitch change during drop. Flys like every other 747.
  • At one point (I don't know if this is still true or not), the authorities wanted to count 4 hours against the airframe/engines for every hour it flew fighting fires due to (percieved?) greater wear and tear. One reason it ain't cheap!

Cool, it's hard to believe how much water and retardant was dropped and yet how little (of what's needed for the fire) was dropped.

But how long do you have to wait between drops to fill that beast?... Seems like that would reduce the effectiveness.

Got to see and listen to these guys in the recent LA wildfires... We refer to them as VLAT's. (VERY LARGE AIR TANKERS). listening to them on A/G frequencies is pretty interesting. Watching them work is even more interesting. tanker 910 (DC 10) and B47 (979). Pretty amazing to hear a DC 10 come within 30' of your head on the lines.

hard to imagine the phosphate stuff would be effective when it is so diluted in the application process.....

Funny I saw this thread last week. One of the evergreen birds landed hear at WPAFB yesterday! Not sure if it was a tanker, or cargo though...

Turns out it was the cargo version, not a tanker:
