Default NASA are full of idiots

When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered that ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300°C.

The Russians used a pencil.

Naaaa..... It is a BS story. Here is the real info where Fisher states they made the pen on their own for less than $1m and that both US and Soviet space programs used pencils until BOTH programs purchased the pens from Fisher in the late 60's.

Yeah, but that kills a perfectly good, (and fictitious) urban legend!
