I got a 100cc in the works with dual ailerons, dual rudders etc. ...my first of this size. I thought it would be easier to go with a Smart Fly PowerExpander Sport Plus because it has the optic kill built into it. I plan on running either the A123 or Li-ions. But when looking up info about it on the company site I see that it states that it can only be used with 50cc to 85 cc planes. Can somebody tell me why?

i think they are refuring to the total servo load requirements that it can handle. those smaller planes usually have alittle less servo draw.if you go a123's there is no need to get any type of power expander. just plug into your reciever using a fromco wolverine switch and use the smart fly ignition kill. if using li-ions then the smart fly could be a good choice for a reg.

Thanks, But the reason I was going to go with a Power Expanded was because of the multi aileron and rudder servos....Im using a Futaba 10C radio.

I'm using the same set up on my 35% 330 Panzl, w/o the engine kill, and I think its great. You don't have to use any Y harnesses, and it easily handles 2 A123 batteries.

The problem is it uses standard JR plugs to connect the battery packs to the unit. These plugs
have a 3 amp rating. I wanted to deliver more current to my unit in a 50cc yak running digitals. All my batteries use dean connectors, so I created a pigtails from a deans male with two JR outputs. On each side of the power expander, I feed power from one battery to the battery port and the charge port delivering twice the current per side. Before doing this I exchanged emails with Robert at Smartfly and was given the OK to implement. |

I use the Smartfly in my 50cc Yak and Extra. I think they're a great all in one solution. IMO, they'd be perfect for any plane that uses up to two servos per surface except that they it uses standard RC connectors for the batteries which limits it's current carrying capacity. It'd be perfect if they made the same exact one with Deans connectors. Doesn't Smartfly have a forum on here to ask these type of questions?

Ok,I see. I would really like to be able to use Deans connectors.......I never noticed that the Sport Plus had the Futaba/JR connectors....That explains it. ...What Power Expander do you guys recommend? I'd like to have one that had the regs and optic kill built into it. Thanks

PowerSystem Eq6 6 to 8 channels should do the job for you. It also has servo matching built in
on 6 of the 8 channels for use on the ganged servos. If you need more channels then you need to look at Competition 12. |

Yep go with the EQ6. I don't know if SF makes one though with the Optic built in and no reg built in. But you can get the optic seperate.
The EQ6 gives you servo matching and reversing.

Standard plugs handle a little ove 4 amps before having problems. if you keep the loads <4 amps, no problems. Why someone would have even a 3 amp load on a standard plug is beyond me. They need to better think through the actual electrical loads used instead of using stall currents for a baseline. Someone setting up a plane that permits the servos to ever stall is not doing anything right.

I had both the Smartfly systems (power expander sport (not the plus) and the Eq6 both had deans connectors), I would go with the Eq6 system. The reason being that it makes setup of multiple servos on a surface (including one per elevator and 2 for rudder) easy to setup along with the many other benefits that smartfly systems provide. I do use the Futaba 10C as well. It will also leave 1 or 2 channels open for smoke or what ever.

Check out the 42% products. I was turned on to this company by a few giant scale guys at my field and I liked the product so I picked up the line. I have a few in stock if you are intrested let me know. They have a 8-16 and a 12-24 input/output boards. They also have a nice kill switch Just send me a pm if you are intrested.

Instead of using a power expander is this set up ok on a 100cc plane? I posted this on another thread but no one has replied. Here is the setup I plan for an AW Extra 300, requires 4 aileron servos (2 per wing) 2 elevator, 1 rudder and 1 throttle.
- 1 Tanic 2300 A123 on the ignition - 1 Smartfly Optical kill - 1 Fromeco Wolverine Switch (for receiver) - 2 Tanic 2300 A123s into the Wolverine (deans plugs on switch and batteries) - 2 Deans plugs out from the Wolverine split into 2 Futaba plugs per output, so a total of 4 Futaba battery plugs going into the receiver slots - Futaba 9157s on all surfaces except throttle (plan on mounting 1 9157 in the tail for the rudder) - 12FG Transmitter - 1 14 channel 2.4 R6014HS receiver (newest model) Do you see any problems with that setup? Is it ok to run that many battery plugs into the receiver and will it distribute the power to the servos appropriately. I have used Tanic A123s on my 50cc planes with great success. |

The EMCOTEC system is perfect to. You can use 2 LiPO 2000 mA redundant.
