And I could have used some restraint in the title of this thread.

But RC Pilot Demonstrating Extremely Poor Judgment Impacts Tandem Parachute" seemed like a really long title.

You all are doing a good job of adding gas to a fire. Feel free to come to Orange and discuss this if you like. I have been in to RC and skydiving for over 30 years with no prior issues. This was a serious mistake and I will have to deal with it. Move on with your selves and try not to make any mistakes of your own.

First of all, the statement you made really bothers me. You are saying: " I have probably more RC time than anyone of you" and then you say, you tried to get clear and made a serious mistake. See that doesn't add up right there. If you regard yourself so experienced you shouldn't have been there on the first place full stop.

Putting everything aside are we all not only R/C pilots so I Fully Understand the dire straights of what could have happened to the jumpers. This coming from the fact I have flown at many sites were there are DZ near were we were flying. Starters Xenia Ohio, Orange County Jump school not that far from the site and yes if the wind was blowing good they would get close, flew at Waynes Ville Ohio also same thing if the wind blew good they landed in the field in front of the runway. Flew at a spot near Cleveland Ohio were the DZ was to the right of the runway off sett-ed of course. In all cases it was a rule of thumb to land if they even got remotely close to us.
With that said second for the most part we are all adults, and human and I am sure that we all have made are fare share of mistakes in life and R/C. This one just really hit close to home because both it involved R/Cers and people could have gotten hurt. Lets remember that there was only one perfect person to walk the Earth. None which is us and without him we would not only NOT have this great world to have our hobbies of choice LIKE flying R/C planes!! One of the best hobbies to have. Anything R/C really its all family!! Try to be a little forgiving to the guy, because at least he was man enough to come in admit it was him and he has stepped up and did the right thing and is paying for everything both money wise, and personally. These are all people the guy (Mike) knew and I am sure he deals with this everyday!! And will continue to do so because like said everyone up there knows him, and he instructs up there. Granted not all of us would have done something this irresponsible but it happened he stepped up.. People always say when things happen I wish the person would just step up and admit so we can move on. WELL he did so why are we still beating him up? Realize the next time something happens that is stupid it could be you that did and YOU asking for people to forgive your actions. Beside the fact of his main statement about his experience which was pouring more gas on the fire at least he stepped up no matter how dumb the action was and it is being handled. I know some of you may not want to hear this but it is true. NO I do not know Mike never met him but in all 30yrs and this was his first error of judgment even though it was major how many people have people at their fields that have on numerous times flown over the pitts or even hit someone or come close and we still allow them to fly. That is just for starters. So come on guys crap happens I love this hobby as we all do because my children are now interested in it has open another door there to do more things with my family. Only in America? Right?? Forgivness is for all.. NOT just for those we think should get it. Trust me try forgiving someone that has taken a family member not just once but twice. So speaking from a terrible situation from my own life as HARD as it is we all have to forgive the Bible say to. Life is short and can me made harder than it has to be by our own short comings. Lets have fun let the people handle it that are doing so and Mike even though not everything was well put Thanks for stepping up to the plate. Yea for the guy that made the video dude no worries you DID nothing wrong... Heads up on your part some of us could have Waited to find out all the details before unloading with both guns, granades, pitch forks, etc we get the point. Just remember the shoe could be on your foot next time guys.

God bless to all!!!
PS Remember Miles and his flamily in your prayers. He will be missed by all of the R/Cers that he touched, and made laugh God Speed PAPPY!!!

All I can say is, I've been in RC for five years and know better then to make a mistake like that. Your 30 years in the hobby means crap if you ask me. You also come off as arogant... Guess what hot shot, you just got your ass in a sling this time. I wonder how many close calls you have had in the past. Feel lucky your not in jail for killing someone. If you read this and I pissed you off "GOOD"

Arrogant is an understatement for his first post. He is the arrogant fool who will get us all grounded.

Hey Prez! Like I said earlier, his post does come off a little harsh, but he's not normally like that. I think it's just that he is under the gun right now. Mike's actually a pretty cool dude.

When I was a kid. We played baseball in the street, but we knew when to get off the street for trafic. We never hit a car coming down the street. Even kids know when to get out of the way.
Oh by the way Mr. French I have been flying for 39 years. So don't judge who has more experience.
Showing off can get someone killed!!!

You know what, I don't know Mike, but I know that many folks, including myself, come across online completly different than we are in person. However, he did an incredibly foolish thing that could result in all of us being grounded. This is not time for statements like.... I've been flying for 30 years,,,, longer than all ya'lls.

We all do foolish things, but when we get caught, or have potentially serious consequences, how we own up to them and how we learn from it is what makes us who we are. The problem here is that it seems that Mike feels like it's his problem and his problem only. However his foolish act affects people who fly toy airplanes(us), the parachute guys, and also brings the FAA into this as it could happen to a full scale plane, not to mention the potential use of an RC plane as a terrorist weapon..... Mike's post seems like he does not grasp the fallout of his foolish actions.

o btw. We had Activities Fair at my school here at Embry Riddle and we have a lot of people that was part of the FAA or is still part of the FAA. A lot of people came up to me hammering me with questions when they saw the size of airplanes we fly...... I also learned in my UAV class there might be some changes happening in the near future.......

So care to expand on that a little? In what manner were you being hammered with questions? positively or negatively?

Both ways really. They were asking questions like the payload they can carry, the fuel it can carry, how long can it go. And saying dont you think this is too big? What happens if you hit something or someone. They just had an hesident voice speaking to me about the bigger planes.
Being around Daytona Beach International Airport we only fly small electrics on the ERAU campus. We have permision from the airport though to fly on the ERAU Campus. We just cant break the altitude rule. And we give way to full scale aircraft. Luckily where we fly they dont fly over us. We will occasionally fly smaller end glow planes.

It doesn't take too much imagination at all to wonder why they were asking questions about max payload, fuel capacity and flight endurance.
