I had a mid-air 2 weekends ago and it was the first for me in over 40 years of RC. My 35% Yak was impacted out at the end of the left wing tip, took out a piece of the LE and took most of the covering off of the top and bottom of the wing. The other plane, a smaller profile was impacted on the top side of the fuse just behind the motor. I came and landed, the other plane was not so lucky. Both planes were new. I did a quick cover job with vinyl and went back flying. The other plane went home in pieces.

I only started last june(2008) So this is my only mid air and suspect it wont be the last. I just hope the new plane lasts longer that three weeks.

Hate to hear that.
Like someone else said, if you tried to hit another plane, most likely, you would miss. We are lucky at our field. When a few of us get in the air, the rest land. They don't want anyone else sharing the space. No, they don't fly much either. Good luck on the next go around!

I have never been in a midair, but have been witness to a couple.
I have a hard time reconciling making someone pay for someone elses airplane unless there is some real negligence involved. Like wiping out someones plane in the pit. In my opinion if you choose to take off then you have taken on the responsibilty of it may not come back in one piece. i think midairs are going to happen, it is not a 3D or circle flier thing. It is just 2 planes trying occupy the same space at the same time. This reminds me of what one of the guys who tought me to fly said "Once they're done, they're doomed. Inside of each and every plane is a hidden expiration date" This makes me think that maybe there should be some guidlines to follow in the case of such incidents. |

About midairs and such -
Now this is my two cents here... If your going to 3D I like to have a spotter. Also when you go out and someone else is firing up or is already flying I usually announce my intentions. Like Fred - I will be hovering to the left, or let me know if coming in for a flyby I will clear out. I don't mind a little verbal comms while I fly. I know this isn't the ultimate fix - but it does seem to help. A little bit of preflight communications doesn't hurt. Ronster |

Technically, for a mid air to happen. Two planes need to occupy the same space. (as previously mentioned). So if one plane is hovering ( in other words only using up one space of air) Then the chances are less likely for there to be a mid air than if both planes are moving around.
![]() Of course if both planes are at home in the hanger the chances grow slimmer yet. Leave them at the store and take up knitting and I guarantee you will never be in the fix your in now. Hey, I'm just kidding. Someday I hope to have a plane big enough to have a midair with. These .40 size things are really hard to hit.....

I was very happy with the covering job on this arf. there has not been one wrinkle yet however I have yet to get the fuse out of the box. But the wings and stabs are coverd very nicely. here they are. after i took that pic with the stabs on the tailgate of my truck the latch broke on my truck and now the tailgate doesnt stay up. FML
