The thread was an interesting read. Not being involved in the rotary wing aspect of the hobby, I can't comment on the setup or rules of airspace usage.

I can say that it does give a good example of why the spotter are needed and the importantance of the spotter being more than just a cheerleader for the pilot. It takes watching the airspace and the other aircraft in the air and communication between the pilot and spotters to prevent accidents.

Hmm..

I wouldnt say that was a pure spotter issue, I think that if pilots (and spotters) would be standing together, pilots and spotters could communicate better and organize the flying.

Discussed this in a thread a while ago.

Looks like the guy flying was in the pattern and the other guy was just hovering.

I just read through the runryder thread- and I learned some things. From what I surmize, at heli meets, each pilot has a box in front of them that is theirs- no one else is to fly into that box. Each box is spaced next to the other down the flight line and is, for example, 100 ft square.

The area out away from the flightline is less defined- and where anyone can fly. So, in this case, the flyer who came down the line, through the other flyers boxes, and hit the guywho was hovering in front of himself is considered to have violated the other flyers airspace and at fault.

For the shankbone challenged.

Cones represent where pilot stands and flags (with or without) represent implied box. Due to chaotic nature of flight inside the box, those wishing to do flybys should do this at least 200' away from the flight line.

i think the spotters should of caught that. first the spotter calling for the guy that ran into the other heli should have seen and said heli in front of you, and the caller in yellow should of yelled UP. i just did the same call at huckfest. my buddy was hovering and some one was doing a fly by across the field and all i could get out was UP and it was close.
