The Hanger 9 SU 85cc. A great rebuild, The Right Horizontal Fin Repair: Today around 8:45 pm Ralf showed up at the front door with the section of the wing that was caught up in the tree and had also gathered all the parts he could find earlier to complete this project, what a good support. Many thanks to you Ralph for your contribution to this project. Although I am no writer, I still felt I should make a whole hearted effort to do my best, so please bear with me on my writing skills. It is my hope that the information helps starters in this hobby. I will devote most of my time to this project, to motivate others to post builds and setups for the average modeler. Craven, time is precious and I have decided to stay focused on this job for now and on the first of each month I will be answering all messages and posts, giving all of you the opportunity to answer fellow members question on the rebuild posts in the mean time. A rebuild project starting tip: ![]() Divide your project into sections, and start with the easiest repair first. The reason I would like you to consider this is so you build up patience and quickly reap the rewards of your work early on, to get you motivated to continue. From the entire wreck the least amount of damage was on the horizontal fins and elevators. That is where I have decided to start the repairs. The right horizontal fin, had a 4 inch rip all the way through it with one rib brocken under it, A decision had to be made do I remove the entire covering or just patch it up. Although I am usually anal about the looks of my airplanes and would have removed the entire covering, but that would involve a lot of work, I had to put that aside and look from the prospective of a slimmer, who just put his money in this basket and ended up with a pile of kindling, Ken I’m not talking about you here. I decided the best course would be to patch it up. The patch up job comes in handy when you puncture the covering moving your plane around. Always remember, a topside puncture is easier to get away with in how it looks after the repair, because what we do is cut out covering directly under it and do the repair to the top covering from that opening. Repairing a covering rip and a rib: Right side Horizontal Fin and elevator: Remove a small section of the covering directly under the rip from the bottom side of the horizontal fin. Take the saved pieces of the rib and glue them back in place to get a pattern this job requires you to remove all the portions from the fin. Trace the old rib on to the new ply piece. Cut out the duplicate new rib, remove any material from the location of the old rib and glue in the new piece where the damaged one was, with a good 5 min epoxy. When gluing a ply piece to balsa use epoxy for a better grip rather than Ca. TIP (Epoxy joints that have the surfaces pricked with many small needle holes give you twice the strength.)The vibration can crack a Ca joint in this application so here I used epoxy. CA works best when both surfaces are balsa, but then I have seen people use CA for quick repairs. After the new rib was glued back, I put the fin on a glass surface with the top down. I realized that the rip also had covering which was winkled. Hum! If try to heat the covering from the sticky side with an iron it would melt the adhesive, curl up and stick to the iron. The best way not to let that happen is to take the discarded piece of material from new covering which protects the adhesive side of the covering and with the shiny side facing down lay the piece over the wrinkled punctured covering, this way when you apply the iron it won’t melt, stick or shrink the area that needs repair. Test your iron on a scrap of covering to heat it until the covering starts to shrink or deform, then back off the heat to a point where it no longer changes the shape of the test covering. With the horizontal fin face down on a glass surface, you are now looking at the puncture from the adhesive side. Place the covering protector paper shiny side down over the wrinkled covering near the puncture; use the iron to work out the wrinkles. Next find some scrap covering of the same color and cut out a circle large enough to cover the puncture. In this case the puncture was 4 inches, so I cut our circle that was 4 ¼ inches in diameter. I then used household glass cleaner and wet the area, placed the circle over the damaged area and used a paper napkin to blot out the cleaner around the circle. Using my iron on low heat I pressed the two coverings together. Remember I had the old covering protective scrap between the iron and the covering so it would not stick or deform the damaged area. Picture 3 with the red bull shows the job completed. You can see the repair only from a distance of 12" beyound that you can't see that reapir, I took a closeup from about 7 inches so you could see it. Next up Right fin repair, damage shown in Picture 4

Baj:
That was very good to enjoy a cup of coffee over. Nice job. The Red Bull will live again! Ralph, you will have to write the story of how your recovered that wing. I know you had all kinds of ideas to get it down. What finally worked?
