Default 9.6V NIMH to 7.4V Lipo

Is it possible to swap out a 9.6V NIMH battery for a 7.4V Lipo battery or is that not enough power for the esc to reconize the smaller volt battery? Reason i ask is i just received a coaxial heli that has the 9.6V NIMH in it but its just not enough power for my liking, plus the flight time is pretty weak also.
