This is going to be my first rebuild of a plane. The plan is to lighten it some for the heaver engine which is a 3W 120. I've had all this sitting for a bit and the wife was getting tired of it so its either make it fly or get rid of it. Here are some pics of where im at. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

It's a bit messy huh......No offense intended. But theres loads of weigth that can be removed off it that I can see.
1. Engine box sides open up some holes with 1" top and bottom edges and a 1/2" vertical web attached to F2 2. Holes in the engine box sides, top and bottom with 3/4 to 1" edges all around. Reinforce with 3/4 hard tri stock inside. 3. Holes cut in the fuse sides passing thru the ply doublers bonded to the balsa sheeting. 4. Lightening holes cut in F1, 2 and 3 sides adjacent to the fuse. 5. Lightening holes spread in a pattern around the top section of F1 where the hatch joins to. 6. CF landing gear and Kevan light weight wheels including Ti axles and CF pants. 7. LG plate make holes in center area 8. More pictures needed of hatch internals, rudder, tail, inside fuse and turtle deck. |

You'll need some diagonals across the top fuse below the hatch when its done to give it some torsion resistance.
Any news on them pics? |

So here are some more pics. The hatch is sheeted foam, as is the bottom of the fuse, turtle deck, wings and tail. I'm looking at the fuse sides. there totally sheeted. After looking at a few lightweight builds on here I think i may remove some of the sheeting. Also may do some trimming on the tail. 2 things i have to do are rebuild the counter balance on the elevator, and build a new hatch for the bottom rear of the fuse. The hatch disappeared in transit overseas... Any more ideas?

A couple.
1. I miss read your post . Hatch building bottom rear ??? You mean the air outlet holes in the pics ? 2. Inside the fuse under the TD looks ok and sheeting can be cut out between the diagonals to lighten Leave the sheeting on the diags so the covering will stick. Leave sheeting in contact areas for tail roots and wings since its 1/8th its already light and binds these areas together where tube and dowels etc are located (hope thats clear)? 3. The inside hatch area pic in the last batch was already covered in my first post. Same for engine box. 4. How about some shots of the tail and rudder. Is this a Carden? Has many similarities in the build That should keep you busy for now Last edited by MODE 1; 10-01-2009 at 12:08 AM. |
