Default DA85 Problem

Earlier I posted my problem with the DA 85 and tried all the recommendations. Problem: Engine has about 1-1/2 gallons through it. On a TOC 95" Extra 260. 26/10 xoar prop. THD canister.. Starts easy , good idle, good response. High jet alittle on the rich side.. Plenty of power on take off. after about 5 minutes in the air it starts to sag . Upon landing the head seems hotter than normal. plug is a light browniss color . plenty of air outlet on the cowl. What are some of the DA upgrades have I missed in the past ?...Thanks for all the past help. Stan Hagerstown ,MD

Well, just sent mine in a few months ago and they replaced everything except the carb. Is your cylinder becoming discolored, like a pink color? Do you have a line going to the metering valve? Do the RPMs of your engine change inverted, KE, mid range?

I assume you have tried richening the high needle? By "sag" I assume you lose power at full throttle after the engine heats up? If so that could be a lean high needle. Or possibly over heating. If not then the you could have in-cowl air flow disturbances affecting the engine's in-flight fuel mixture like gapple12 mentioned.

Try richening the bottom slightly.

I suspect overheating by lack of cooling. This failure mode typically sets in at about the three minute mark in flight.
"plenty of air outlet" does that mean a baffled engine, and a healthy pressure difference across the baffles to provide ample cooling airflow?

I would think in some cases, with the wrong header and pipe configuration, your engine could run to hot as well. I have baffled my engine and made a larger exit for the air. This didnt change the engine performance much, but the engine was much cooler when i landed. I just added the metering valve line and ran it into the fuse hoping for some improvements on my 85.

There is no baffling on the cowl. One thing I just noticed that may be my problem. When I landed on my last flight ,I notice there was some play in the front hub bearing where it may be sucking air. Any comments. Many THANKS for all the input from all of you pilots out there. Stan

You need to contact DA. That was an old issue with the 85 I believe when they were first around. Just give them your engine serial number and they can tell you all updates that it needs. There is a new case and piston that needs to be replaced. Also, you need to baffle some air around that head if your running a header and can. I think they run hotter on pipes and cans. Just my two cents.....
