...and the rest of us. In Atlanta, the organizing comittee tried to recover funds by directly selling trinkets, flags, clothing, posters, food, etc, in "Atlanta Olympics" kiosks. The IOC was horrified at their blatant act of "capitalism" and now forbid the host cities from directly "profiting" from the games. Now the local community, state, province, and eventually nation, must provide the funds. The "Games" themselves cannot be used to raise money to fund the "Games". Ironic to say the least.

The Olympics would have been the main reason used in congress to fund construction projects all over Illinois, and a "select few" people would have become enormously wealthy at taxpayer expense. Same thing happened in Utah with the Winter Games in 2002 (light rail, speed skating oval, ski resort upgrades, Bear Hollow ski jump and bobsled center, the Athletes Village at Ft Douglas - now owned by the University, Gateway Center, etc. were all built with fed and state money, and now the "local organizing committee" owns/runs them).

After what I saw at SLC (and a good friend who was a gov't official in Sydney told me) I have to say that Rio probably sent more and better "women" (...or "men" as the case may be, not that there is anything wrong with that...) to the IOC members' suites in the runup to the vote.

There is a good reason "The Athletes' Village" (where the athletes and IOC members and former Olympians all stay/party) is closed to all media. It will be fun to see what gets out this next time now that cellphones all have cameras. Remember the pic that was sent around from Torino of Bode Miller, 3 sheets to the wind, draped all over his "woman for the night"? A former co-worker of mine was a 3-time Olympian, and he had some stories to tell (any/all the "women" you want, open bars, partying every night until 4 am, you name it! - just no "performance enhancing drugs").

That said, if you ever get a chance to attend the Olympics definitely go! It is a lot of fun. The Opening Ceremonies are definitely better without that dolt Bob Costas running his mouth ad nauseum. Just turn a blind eye to the corruption around you and have fun. I hope to go to Vancouver next February for some events, maybe some hockey, skiing/riding events, or ski jumping.
