Default TT TOC 37.5 Rebuild

Hey all. I recently decided to step up from 50cc to 150cc class. I started with this project as a budget deal, and I began collecting stuff about 5 months ago. With the poor economy, I laid in the weeds and picked up stuff in fire sales and good-buddy deals.

I first picked up a pair of Fromeco 4800 mAH A123 LiFe batteries, then a bunch of Futaba S9156 Servos, then a low mileage 3W157CS and finally a thrashed TT TOC Yak 54 37.5% airframe. My plan was to do all this for under $2,000.

I put in probably 50 hours on the rebuild, changed the color scheme a bit and got her flying a couple weeks ago. It's an awesome aircraft, and I am very happy with the results.

I kinda lost control of my budget when I fell victim to the wow factor of the Powerbox Royal, and the dual battery and dual receiver redundancy piece of mind that it brought.

I have uploaded a photo journal of the rebuild HERE.

You made an excellent choice (TOC Yak 54) for a rebuild, nice pictures and clean build, they are great flyers. I have one and want to change the paint scheme but I’m having questions run through my mind on the hinges. Did you take your control surfaces off for the color scheme change? If so which way did you choose, new hinges or drive the pins out and replace? At this point, I think those are the 2 best options, what are some of your thoughts and I would love to hear from anyone that has this in mind…

Thanks Guys... it was a labor of love, and the reward was a very nice flying plane for a very small investment out of pocket.

As for the hinges, I simply left them hinged. I didn't see any bad or loose ones. I taped the surface flat and covered right over the bevel gaps. Then slit the covering down the center of the gaps and ironed that into the bevels. After that, I cut strips a little wider than the bevel faces and ironed those onto the faces of the bevels to get the color all the way to the hinge-line. It looks fine like that, and when you trim the excess right at the bevel point you see no joints in the covering.
