Default CRATING NICKB YOUR NAME HERE DALTON

Crating up nicks new Dalton ML . The crate OD is 3x3x8' .
I wrap everything in celofane so the jiggle wont scuff anything .
Then go around with buble wrap ,pillow side toward the part .
The ML will fit in 8' without the rudder and at an angle .

The 2x4s are set back 7/16" so the sides and ends will all be suported by the bottom and skids.
Take note of the corner 2x4 it will suport the weight on both side and end parts.

I first staple and then screw all parts . Also there is some gorilla glue mixed in . Take no chances !

Be sure there are no loose joints so the sides wont want to bend and fatigue .

Layer the parts and peanuts . I also lined the inside with foam.
The wings were put into the bags and then I put shucks around them . Lots of foam and dont want things to shift much .

I hope this helps someone .
Wish I could have delivered the one to nick But maybe I will get to see it fly.
Took it to the shipper today .One last look over the shoulder and I got a little choked up . Nick will enjoy this one .

Nice work Gordo.

One quick question though........... do you secure the parts within the box or do they just "float" within the sea of peanuts? If you do secure the parts, how do you do that?

OK, that's two questions..... sorry.

Cheers,
Dave

Yea, I'm curious the price to build the box and ship that plane. Looks very secure, nice job.

I like an angled top and handles on the sides. This way they can't stack things on top of it or place it on its end.

I just crated and shipped a 35% Dalton from Illinois to Texas. Materials ran about $85 ($45 for wood and screws and another $40 for 20 cubic feet of packing peanuts) and shipping was another $100. My crate was built out of 1/2" CDX plywood and was 84"x30"x20". I had found an article about it online that was very helpful:

I put the tail group in the bags from Caroline and they fit back in the box . I also boxed up every thing I could in there own box and made some empty boxes to take up space . All the foam shucks also went in and around the wing bags . alot of broken foam sheeting and peanuts as you go . Now the cool thing is Nick has a surprise when the lid comes off there is a battery and fan on a pressure switch it will look like confetti .

It was right at $ 50.00 for the crate and $ 51.00 for the peanuts and bubble wrap. Not counting the go-rilla glue and a very large sharpy .
