Ok so I pulled the carb apart and there was some gunk in the screen, but i don't think it is enough to cause this kind of problem. I cleaned it all out put it back together and the problem still exists.
I am now under the impression that the problem is electrical because of the fact that the motor ran fine for a few tanks. I'm thinking the sensor on the motor for spark has gone bad possibly from the heat gun getting it too hot. So I think I will order this part and try it, and if not I'll have no choice but to send it in for service. |

Depending on the type of heat gun, if used over the magnet it's possible to have weakened the magnet. Hall sensors are both cheap and easy to replace so that would be the first place to go with ignition testing.

Better yet go to www.southeastrcengines.com and get a Hall Sensor and CDI checker!

I'm really hoping this is the problem, I didn't want to move the sensor because I didn't want to change timing. I do know that it got really hot, so it's very possible it's damaged.

It always pays to check everything - starting from the simple.
Fuel Screen - Ok - you did that one Timing - you changed the hub according to your first post - maybe the magnet is in a slightly different spot (I don't know about DL but a certain brand that I used to deal with had the magnets all over the place - no 2 hubs were the same) - Timing is easy to check - do it. Another couple of people have offered some very sound advise - check the needles - maybe start from "factory" (about 2 turns out on both) and retune - I assume you had the hub off to do some sort of repair there - things do change. Hall sensor / Ignition checkers are an incredibly useful tool to have - not very expensive but once you get one, you will wonder how you lasted so long without one. I just looked at the list of some of the advisors on this thread - there is well over 100 years of Gas Experience amongst the ones I know of and IMHO some of the worlds best RC Gas Engine people. (Sorry Pat, Bill, Al, Jody and others - didn't mean to make you feel decrepit)

Good to get together this last weekend. Even better Tom came out too! What did you think of that reversed/inverted hovering nose "touch" with Gary's Yak? More support for my negative attitude about radio controlled electronic engine cuts. Once again a nice plane destroyed because a of button or switch that could be accidentally triggered at the worst possible time. Works out real good for kit, engine, and electronics distributors though

Yes, Tom and I had a great time, great guys down there. Thanks again to Jeff and Gary for the invite and hospitality. I really felt bad for Gary, that plane must have a curse. That was the first time I'd seen someone turn their back on their plane before it hit the ground from only 30 feet. I rarely get to see a mishap like that from as perfect a vantage point as I saw that one, but a perfect engine off full hammerhead from 30 ft., awesome! It was kind of funny and Gary was a really good sport about it, super nice guy.
