Joe, I went with the diodes over regulators just because I think they are less likely to fail. Bob Pasterello did a lot of research and did a big thread on RCU and seems to be really happy with his set up. He used the 1N4007 diodes though.
Once you switch over to A123's everything else pales in comparision.

Those diodes have an average current rating of only 1 amp but I'm sure for an ignition 1 amp is enough. I'd prolly go 3 amp myself. Just insurance.
