I HAVE had a few of these.....
I would suggest putting the little nylon bushings from McMaster Carr in the hinges of the elev and rudder.....
I have a flag scheme and a resurrectable futaba scheme....

Love this plane.....

ummmm... IMHO, if you have over 300 oz*in in the servo.... the elev only needs one servo each.....

I have like 200 plus flights set up this way... and the last 70 with a 3W170 w/L90K's

you will love this plane!!

I know this plane has been around a while and I would appreciate any suggestions, improvements, etc. I am looking for any info especially regarding 3rd wing and 2nd stab servo installs, and tuned pipe installs.

Thanks in Advance!

I only have 2 JR 8711's in the wings and one in each elevator, im running a 3W170cs on L90 cans. i dont like the tuned pipes for imac as they loose their mid range. BUt thats just my opinion. i also have teflon bushes in my tail.

I have a compy 3m 260 with over 220 flights on it now. I've been competing in a little IMAC recently and flown lots of freestyle with the plane so it's had a reasonably hard time.

It's definitely developed slop in the phenolic hinges in the tail, so Mith is spot on about making the bushing modification. I plan on doing it this winter.

I have run single 8711's on each stab since the start with no problems. I run a 1.75" arm and have max'd the travel out for freestyle and have no gear problems with the servo. Going with 2 gives you the redundancy but you also have counter balances, which the 260 doesn't have, so personally I'd run a single servo and weight the counter balances to balance the control surface.

I run 2 x 8711 in the stock mounting position on the ailerons. If I built it again, I would consider mounting the second servo in the outer position but the plane still snaps precisely with both ganged on the inner position if you get the throws right on the rest of the surfaces.

I'm not sure about pipe installation on the SX but I have experience with different pipe set ups. I have used Greves and find if you don't mount them exactly right, they often dent and can crack because the material is so thin. I've since used KS 1090's and found the mid range worked better for me and they were easier to mount, although a little heavier. I've some friends running RE3's on the 170 with good results also.

A buddy of mine is flying a MX2 on all 5955's. 2 on each aileron, 1 each elevator, and 3 on the rudder. MORE than enough power!!! Of course, he is running 8.4V direct. He had another MX2 with all 8711's (6) and a Seiko on rudder. 8.4V direct and 12.6V on the Seiko!!

You will not need the extra servos. Save your money and time, and get this thing going!!

I surface mounted the servos...I have one 8711 inboard and one out board on the ailerons. This works really well for the plane and makes it easy to replace servos if needed. I had an 8711 on each elevator half but switched to the 8711hvs. I have had good luck with these too. There are 2 8711s in the rudder tray too. This keeps for a simple setup. I love the plane and while it is an older plane from Compy...it is still in my opinion the best flying plane they have.

This is my build thread..hopefully it wil help you some:
