Default FUEL, regular, super or racing gas!!!!!!!!

What type of gas do you use in your engines?
I have been using regular unleaded with 100 to 1 amsoil most of the time but last Sunday, my 275 was running rough and I could tell the motor wasn't happy and power was down so Dino Spaduccini came to the rescue and offered me to use his mix (racing fuel with redline oil), the difference was night and day, my motor ran smooth with a lot more power, I never thought the quality of the fuel made this much difference, I am sold on the racing fuel, not sure of the cost but I understand it's very expensive.

Elie try Belray H1R @ 40:1 with regular 87 octane gas. I swear by it. The H1R won't burn so you'll have to run a little rich but you'll love the results.

Been playing with fuel recently while keeping the same Belray mix as usual. I thought DA recommended regular but when I read the instructions for my new 170 found they were recommending higher grade (89).

I've just run the same mix in my 150 and found I definitely had an improvement in power when I stepped to 89 - and I thought smoothness. I'm going to keep playing. I thought 3w's were timed for premium fuel but DA's more like regular?

check and make sure they did not put a bunch of alchohol in your fuel I noticed My Chevron store put up a sign "may contain up to 10% alchohol" this will lean your engine if you have alchohol. The race fuel just richened your mixture you can tune that out if you want. I bought some Today at the VP racing fuel plant hear today. You will likely pay close to 10 bucks a gallon or better for the race fuel. http://www.vpracingfuels.com/ I like the Motorsports 103 I have also been recomended the C10 is a good fuel that would be safe in our engines. Hope this helps...

Al for years I used the Belray at 50 to 1 and my engines ran fine, excellent oil, I later switched to Amsoil and also had no issues, most of the time I used regular gas (fill the my car tank and the gas can) just convenient but after trying the racing fuel this past weekend I was sold, the 275 is a high compression motor and 3W recommend using premium fuel, DA now also recommends the use of Premium fuel in the 170 if I am not mistaken, The motor ran smoother, power increased and sounded much happier, there was a big difference between the regular and the racing fuel, I think I will try the super first before going for the racing fuel, maybe that's all I need.

Definitely the motor sounded a little lean, we have 10% ethanol in our fuel.

I won't vote because the fuel I run isn't on there. I run 91 non oxygenated. 50 to 1 Bel-ray MC-1. Great combo.... Alcohol is for drinken.

The PURE station where I buy my gas is across from the Volusia County Speedway and they have a sign which states NO ALCOHOL in their fuel. They sell plenty to the racers.

I buy premium gas only becaue I don't use it up that fast. Octane falls off during long periods in the can so I plan for the degradation during storage.

Low compression engines, like most have, don't gain much, if anything from octane levels above 87-89. 3w, ZDZ, MVVS, and I guess now the large DA's are higher compression engines and the higher octane of premium delays combustion/pre-ignition that an occur in high compression engines using lower octane fuels. Hot carbon deposits also generate a similar condition called detonation.

You might want to try an experiment. Buy a couple of gallons of premium unleaded and mix it with that Redline at 50-1. You may find that the racing fuel was only a part of the improvement.

I've been using 87 octane and Pennzoil aircooled at 40:1 in my DA-150, 3W-100, DA-50 and DLE-55......

Elie,
At the TAS this year, the Aussies were here getting ready and they were having problems with their engines. Seems they didn't like the 10% Ethanol we have in our fuels. They went to a 100 octane low lead no ethanol and their motors picked right back up with no problems. I don't think you want to go any higher than about 100 to 102 octane but the higher octane does help with detenation that our motors are famous for having. VP is a great fuel but a little pricey. We have Sonoco race fuels here for about $6.00 a gallon. Not too bad in my opinion. Hope this helps.

Octane questions could fill hundreds of pages if we got into it but here's what I have found .

Over 8 years of go kart racing we would be "oct" tested at least twice a day at the

big races . What you would see was a RAPID fall off from fresh fuel in the morning , say

showing 98 oct , then late in the day it could be as low as 93 oct . On hotter days it would go

off very quickly (4 hours) but on cold days it may only drop off by 2 oct .

This was from some of the early Shell fuels ,which did and still do contain a strange mix .

Good FRESH fuel is "good" for two to three days at best and thats stored in ideal conditions .

The same old thing applies , steel can and in a cool dry place .

From the mouth of a pertolium engineer

"when you hear the hiss of the fuel can thats all your bottom end going up in fumes"

basic rules of fuel usage for me are .

NEVER MIX OLD AND NEW FUEL , (the old fuel will pull it down) .

STICK TO ONE SUPPLIER

Keep an eye on the age of your fuel , (four weeks is top for me )

Stu

I always try and use the highest octane leaded fuel - the lead helps with lubrication and the higher octane makes the motors run smoother - my 3W's are more sensitive than my DA's - my 3W's are all comp versions except for one 157 and this motor is less sensitive - my conclusion = run the best fuel you can afford just like the oil's
