Well I finally got around to running the RCGF 50cc "B" engine for the first time. Setup was a bit different as the carb face is nearly level with the stand-offs. This meant having to build a rig with a hole for the carb that we could clamp onto a post. Lots of room for vibration in a setup like that. One darn mounting bolt kept backing out of the board. We finally got that straight and after a little tweaking of the needles, still don't have them perfect, got the engine running well. I used the RCxel tach to make sure I got good readings. Running a Vess 22A on a stock muffler with Belray H1R @ 40:1 with 87 octane pump gas. Sorry for the shortness of the video but the battery died. I'm sure I'll post plenty more latter. My first impression of the engine is WOW! Considering this thing is $330.00 with free shipping I'd jump all over one. I still don't know how long the engine will last but if the machining and finishing is any indicator it should be just as long as my DL. In researching the engine the only thing bad I could come up with was the companies failure to control their QC. They say they have that sorted out now so I guess we can only wait and see. I can tell you that Ron checks the engines so he should be able to see, and stop, any problems before they reach the customer. I can also tell you that if they start slipping on their QC he will drop them like a hot rock. Personally I think it's quite an impressive engine to turn 7200rpm on a Vess 22A on its first run. Once broken in this thing should be just as strong as my DL-50. Enjoy!

Thanks for the link Al.
Now is it just my imagination or did that video sound much more crisp than would be anticipated from a budget engine. I was kinda expecting some burble some lag or popping but the pick up from idle was fuss free sharp and fast. The idle appeared very controlled and consistent too. More akin to a high end engine. I've run some cheap engines in the past and they just don't sound right somehow if you know what my jabbering means. So whats next. Fitting it to a model and giving it some long term actual testing? |

This thing is a really nice engine. Fully machined case and tight tolerances all around. I plan on putting a couple of tanks of gas through it and getting the needles perfect then its going into my Wild Hare Edge 540T V2. Should be a great 3D plane with this engine. It will be on a can in the plane but once broken in should spin that Vess 22A @ 74-7500 rpm. As far as cheap, the only thing I've seen cheap about it is the price, $330.00 with free shipping.

Looking forward to a vid of the flight. Are you doing any post checks like compression etc and then cross ref these later after some use or are you going to use the original tolerances as your benchmark and see how it bears up over time?

Believe me I'll be looking at everything. Once the ring is seated I'll check the compression. I have all of the measurements I did of the cylinder and piston so I can keep a tab on them as well. Here's the info I gathered before running the engine...
Cylinder is round within .0006. Top of bore is 1.6947" bottom is 1.6944". Top of the piston is 1.6891, bottom is 1.6910. Bottom face of the clyinder is flat within .0008". Ventilated top journal on the rod for lube and drilled bottom journal. Rod and crank are both forged steel. Case is machined aluminum. Crank, rod, piston, and cylinder appear to be the same as the DL-50. Machined case is definitely not DL. Carb is a Walbro WT 664A. CDI is RCxel.

I have a "B" version of the zrcgf.com 62cc engine on my WM 1/3 scale Super CUB.
The engine utilizes what looks like a Zenoah G62 jug. So far I've run 2 gallons of pennzoil through the motor with no problems, starts up every time and runs like a top. I'm switching over to 50:1 redline and I'm running a Zoar 22x10 at 6850. For the money you can't go wrong with these engines, especially the service provided by Henry over at zrcgf.com

Sounded great Al. I'll really be curious about the 62. If it works out it should be just the ticket for the bigger 50 size planes.

I have a NIB 62 here that I'll also be testing. Looks for all the world like a Zenoah 62 with a rear carb. Engine is selling for $340.00 with free shipping at http://www.southeastrcengines.com/see_010.htm The 62 will be going into my Aviation Models 30% Extra 260 so I can get some of the lead out of the front end. LOL Got a 22X10 Hawk prop on the way for it. Should produce over 30 pounds of static thrust with that prop.

Well I just got the props for the 62. Ron sent me a 22X10, 23X10, and a 24X8 so it should be interesting trying all three out for the best performance.

Good to see they finally went with a composite reed. The metal ones they used before were a problem.

Yep, metal reeds are great until one breaks. Not good for the piston or cylinder.
