If the weather cooperates this weekend I'm going to run, and tune, the 62cc on the canister it will run in the plane. Should be interesting. Will be running the 22X10 Hawk prop so I'll try and get some good video of the rpm readings for you guys.

I think I lost about 200 rpms with the canister over the stock muffler on my brand of motor. Of course I am still on my break in fuel so I am not holding those numbers in stone yet. I am ready to switch to my redline now. So I will see how the numbers compare after about a gallon of redline. A few 100-200 rpms don't matter to me cause I like the sound of it!

I would be very curious in the rpm you get with a smaller prop on the 62. Strange that you got 6800rpm, same rpm I got with a number of props on the 62. It even sounds the same as mine, no 2stroke peak

It was no match for my DL-50.

I have some nr's on a now well run RCGF 62cc "B" and a 50cc "B". (both engines +- 1 hour of flight time)
Both engine are run at 6300 feet above see level, fuel used is 95 octane pump fuel mixed at 32/1 Stihl HP.
The 62cc mounted on a huge scratch built stick running a Xoar 22x10 at 7100 RPM
The 50cc mounted on a 50cc Katana running a Menz S 23X8 at 6600 RPM
The 50cc is slightly more powerful then my DL-50 (same prop 6400-6500 RPM)
The 62cc definatly out dose the DL-50 as it would run the Menz S 23x8 at 7200-7300 RPM.
The stick that the 62cc is mounted on, weighs 9 kg (+- 20 lbs) and the engine will pull it straight up without any problem.

Don't waste your time on that canister system... all you do is loose power with a 60cc engine, 2-300 rpms to be exact. I tested one last summer when that design came out.

Might be fine for a 50cc though, I didnt have one handy to try it.

Not a big fan of the flex header either, nice thought though.

I plan on doing the same. With the thrust this engine seems to put out with the 22X10 Hawk I don't think 200 rpm is going to hurt it one bit. Just trying to keep it quiet and these canisters seem to do a real good job of that.

Al,
Yeah I belong to 2 clubs the first club I joined is where Ron (serce) flies at and the other club is where the fx3d is held. The 2nd field we are going to be lossing in a few years because the city is turning it into a vet. cemetary.(Which is respectfully fine to all of us!!!) Well at that field they are having about 80-100 barials per month so that is why I am trying to convert all of my planes to the canister set-up. I know that if I was attending a funeral then I would get distracted by all of the planes buzzing around in the air. The other field is in a commercial zoning area so no need of noise restrictions. Sorry didn't mean to get off topic. Hope all of your testing goes good! Are you using the rpm tach in your planes while flying them, or just on the ground for testing? The only thing I would like to see them change is the size of wire used for the y-harness. Just my 2 cents.

They are a pretty nice can. You can not go wrong with the price either. The header is not the best out on the market, but I am sure that it will hold up for a while!

I plan to just use the tach on the ground. I can check rpms at the field with my other tachs. Not confident enough to fly with it hooked into my Halls sensor. LOL That may change though.

Great information to have. I haven't seen a thing I dislike about these two engines yet. It's great to know that they are lasting. That's usually the key factor in new engines and the bearings are usually what makes then give out. Chinese bearings give out after about three flights so until I can find out what is in these I would have to assume, based on your info, they are good bearings.

Al,
I have been running the tach while flying since the day I got sent one! I now have about 2 gallons ran threw the motor while using this tach. I figured that a lot of people would want to run them while in the plane, so I figured if something went wrong then I guess i'd rather be the genny pig! lol I am going to make up my own y-harness that has a little more meat to it. I have it mounted in the cock pit of my wh 88" edge. I love it can see rpms before and right after you land! Thanks for all the info about the rcgf line of engines. I hope they are a great motor another one that is a good motor for a great price is always the out come we like to see!

Well that's good to know. I may still mount it in the Extra. Got to finish testing out the engine first though. I'm not too concerned about the Y connector as it only carries a low voltage signal to the CDI. I was thinking if something happened to the tach itself, but on second thought I guess the Halls sensor would still have direct contact with the CDI and would still keep the engine running.

Now, let's talk about this can setup a little. This is not the same as the ones Tomy sells for his MT line. I have compared it to those. Although it is made for a 50cc I thought I'd give it a test on the 62 just to see what it does. I fully realize the flex pipe is not a tuned pipe but at $80.00 complete, it offers a great way for guys to quiet down their gassers without spending a ton of money. If all I lose is 200 rpm on this 62cc then I would run it in a heartbeat. If the rain ever stops today we'll see what it can do.

As long as we're talking about "other equipment", and it's still raining, let's take a look at the prop I am testing on this engine. I had heard of the Hawk props but never seen one until Ron sent me one to test on a DLE-55. We had great results on that engine. I'll be running the same Hawk 22X10 on this engine. If you look at the front of these props they have a very broad blade. The lead edge is curved back to the tip and the underside of the blade is slightly concave. This double curve should make for a very stiff prop moving a lot of air. If you watch the video of this prop running take notice of the sweatshirt I'm wearing and how much it's being blown back. That is not a thin jacket guys but a heavy sweatshirt. I'll have to verify the static thrust once the engine is mounted in the plane but it sure feels like a heck of a lot of thrust coming off of this prop.
