hi guys,
i have a really nice old quique yak its the 85 inch. i just ruined the canopy so i need a new one. i would hate to have to trash the whole plane just cus i cant get a canopy, its an awesome flyin plane. is there any universal plastic things so i just have to make the frame and trim out the plastic part? is there any other planes that use the same one? does anybody have one? any tips would be greatly appricated.

There was a time when I knew of a guy in the business. Bubby Spivey of Lanier. I sent him a canopy from a kit that was discontinued (not his) and he took it to his plug collection and matched it up with one that was damn near perfect. He pulled me one or used one he had in stock I don't know. There is no one left you can do that kind of thing with today that I know of. Unless maybe you have family overseas. I think it cost me $10.I'm thinking you will have to look around flying fields until you see a canopy that will work and make your own frame.

Or take the measurements of what you have and call any dealer and get them to try and match one up thats a tad bigger which can be trimmed.
Canopies are fairly forgiving items they can be cut and bent to suit most any ap. I used a 40% Extra canopy for a 35% Edge I was building some years back. On a YAK you will have to add the frame effect with tape. Whens that war bird gonna continue Lou? |

I have the same plane and since the canopy and front hatch is one big plastic part, I dread ever looking for a new one. I would likly build a frame up hatch with balsa sheeted deck and use the canopy from some other plane that has parts in stock.. I have repaired a crack in the front hatch just below the clear part of the canopy,, epoxy and red eletric tape are doing it for now. good luck! sure is a great plane!

the canopy on this thing is like one big plastic pice and the front 6 inches is painted like the fuse. ill take a picture of it in a bit. i have all the pices so i can glue em all back together but its gona look like crappppp. i was also wondering how do they make these things so if worse comes to worse i could make a mold off of this one and copy it some how.

if the hatch is wood with the canopy extending onto the front of it you should still be able to fit another one thats different in shape and only the canopy section. But you will need to cover the front of the hatch to match up with the fuse.
Another way: If you can salvage the front part of yours and glue that onto the hatch. A dremel could be used to remove the actual bubble part which could then be replaced. |

If that was mine I would cut where I have marked on the pic with a dremel and measure whats removed then do as already mentioned in my previous post. You could secure the new canopy like any other ARF build and use thin pinstripe tape of the same or dif color if you liked, to dress the edge up. No one would know anything was done differently. The rear former and front deck will create the shape of a slightly different design canopy so it would all look fine afterwards.

You might ask Tony from Pilot-Rc his older Yaks had a all lexan canopy like that one you have. Or TBM might have one of his canopys from his parts. hope this helps you out.
