Default extra gone bipe

hi all i have a great planes 40 size extra that i built from a kit. it had a bit of an accident about 6 months ago and one side of the wing was damaged so i had a thought lets make it into a bi plane. so i started doing some drawing and i came up with a 49" wing span with a 3" sweep and 8" tip and root cords also i will have a 2" positive stagger. the fuse from back of spinner to tail is 47" so all in all it will be an almost square plane. i am planning on using symmetrical airfoils and will be powering it with a saito 82 what do you think here is a pic of my idea

Im building a bipe right now but its a scratch build from 3 views ......yours should be fine so long as you calc the CG correctly.
I seem to recall Tom from Wildhare making an Edge 540 bipe out of parts from his 80+ models.......lol wasnt exactly a babe magnet

I think it will look pretty cool. Most of the ultimate bipes look like extras anyway.

well here is what i have so far i am still working on how to do my inter-plane struts. i had a though that since my wings will only be 49" long. if i build both wings strong enough do the i struts need to be functional? my thinking was that i found on the great planes 40 size ultimate the i struts fit into slots in the wing but are not bolted in so they are just there for looks and not structure. do you think this would work on my project? here is a pic of the thought and what i have so far

HA HA. I bought that plane from Tom. That thing was *****. But it drew attention to it's self. Some guy in WA bought it off me.

Despite the small size of the model you'll still need to secure the struts somehow or they will work themselves loose over time. The rocking effect of the top wing and its impaction onto the lower wing as you roll will gradually work its magic.

Why not a simple plywood tab on the inner wing surfaces. Only one per panel side. This can be drilled and blind nut fitted so the struts can be screwed to the tabs securely and in quick time.

i thought of that too. my other thought would be to have a knurl screw embedded into the strut and a wood pin that would screw into the bottom of the wing but the tab would be easier to design i will try that thanks for the idea

OK, I will follow along with this idea, I would assume we can call this a semi scratch build project. Will you have a camera available to provide a picture now and then? What is the condition of the fuselage and tail, are you thinking about landing gear location?

yes i do have a camera available. and yes it is a semi scratch built project. when i crashed the plane i did not realize i was dead stick until i went to pull into a vertical up line at about 100 feet off the ground which promptly stalled the plane and it went strait into a tree/bush but never hit the ground. the plane came to rest about 2 feet off the ground and the only damage done was ripped the left wing half in half. so i could have just re built the wing but i also have a 50cc extra so what is the point. so now fast forward 6 months and i have decided to resurrect the plane into a bi plane. i am completely re designing the wings so it will look something like an ultimate biplane. as far as landing gear go the main gear will be at the leading edge of the bottom wing so i think i will keep them where they are. here are some pics of the plane in its current state.`also i have decided to up the engine to a .61 2 stroke for a little extra ponies

Your new wings are going to be less cord than the originals yes? So whats is the plan to fill in the void on the fuse which otherwise would have been the wing seat? And did you adjust for the narrower wings positioning ending up as 0 incidence?
