Burn Gas.. Bend wings.

Hi, I have the older 85in qq yak, and would like to put smoke system on it this winter. I have no idea where to begin to put the system in the airframe. if some one has this plane with smoke or the newer one can you post a photo of the layout, Tank sizes, battery placements. Thanks a bunch.
Mike

What smoke pump do you plan to use? I would just kind of base your smoke setup off of the space you have. I would try to place the tank over the CG if possible, but if not, get it as close as you can, that way your CG (and trim) does not change throughout the use of the smoke fluid. For your smoke tank size, I use my fuel tank as a general reference. I don't go any larger than my fuel tank. On my 102" QQ Yak, I had a 32oz fuel tank, and used a 24oz smoke tank. That gave me 1 1/2 minutes of smoke on my DA 100 with regular mufflers. Use the tank that best fits into the space you have, then mount your pump accordingly. What size fuel tank do you have in it right now? Seth

Thanks, I beleave i have a 24 oz tank, I will have to down size that a bit to make 2 tanks fit. I am starting from scratch withthe smoke system stuff. tryign to read other threads on the subject. I am hoping someone will chime in that has this plane set up.

this is funny. i have the same plane and i was just talking to seth about smoke in it at rdrc flys for tots. my gas tank is right in the middle. i was thinking about getting the same size tank and putting them side by side. putting the fuel on the right to fight the torque effect for aborted landings. some of the things seth said is dont bother on these little planes cus its too much extra weight but if you do set it up to measure the flow rate so you put out 8oz per minuet at full throttle per cylinder.

On my 100cc stuff (regular mufflers) I start out at 8oz per minute, per muffler (at full throttle). Thats a fairly good starting point, and you can slowly turn it up from there. With canisters or pipes, its really kind of pointless to add smoke, because when you pump the smoke into the can/pipe, you drop about 200-300 RPMs instantly and it sucks. You won't put quite as much fluid into each can/pipe as you would a regular muffler. For a pump, I have been using the TME Smoke pump for the last 3 years or so. Has worked great for me! I know a lot of other people use the Harris pump as well. Heard great things about it too. Seth

the size and weight effect is somethign I have thought about, its one of those why change a plane that already works reallly good.. and as you said teh added wieght on the 50cc size plane is going to effect things. now when i can get the 100cc aeroworks edge it will be having smoke.. some day when i justify getting it,, and oh its very temping after seeing a guy in my club fly thr 50cc edge...
this is still possible withthe qq yak, but will see. its an effect i would like to have for sure.mike

another good smoke pump is the powerbox one.
I dont normally run smoke in my planes because I hate the mess but on planes that I have run smoke on I generally try to make it a removable unit. That way if you don't want to run smoke you can just remove the tray that has the pump, battery and smoke tank on it. Then all you need to do is put a stopper of some type (fuel dot) on the smoke line. Also I know a lot of people suggest using the black neoprene tubing but I have found that medium size glow fuel tubing works better.

I had the competition Harris Smoke pump in my QQ 73" Yak and now have it in my 30% Edge. This is a light system that runs off your receiver batteries. A water bottle smoke tank would help keep the added weight to a minimum.

dude i did it and its so awesome!!! its so worth the extra weight witch really isent too much.
warning: the plane is a little messey cus imm changing a lot of stuff, i just got my 9303 and 921 reciver for doing this and its all going in there at once. my plane had a 24oz. fuel tank and i usually only fly for about 10-12 minuets and i would only use 1/3 of a tank. so i figured if i changet it to a 16oz. tank i will use half of it and it turns out imm right. so 2 16oz. tanks, side by side, fit perfictly in this plane right on top of the wing tube, butted right up to the bulkhead thing. first thing i did was strip out everything thenput a pice of 1/8 ply in there with some truck cap weather stripping stuck everywhere. then i put the other fueler for the oil on the other side with one of those old school push pull switches in there with it but i dident put the charge jack thing with it, i dident want to cut any more holes so ill just have to take the canopy off to charge the smoke battery.

now to mount the pump i took 2 spruce 1/2x1/4 sticks and a pice of 1/8 ply with rubber grommets on both sides of the bolts to take some of the vibration.
also make shure you left room up front to get to the wing clips and theres a picture of where i mounted the smoke battery and the check valve with the neopreme tube to the muffler. the cg did not change but its a bit heavier witch is kinda good cus now the motor is a couple of clicks higher to hover so that means it pumps more smoke!!! O-YEAH

i do have two questions for seth or or anybody that uses a tme smoke pump.
1. do you use the pinch off valve and where do you put it? I put it about 4 inches after the pump on the "out" side of the pump to the muffler is that ok??? 2. is it supposet to sound like this???

I know you were looking for pictures of another yak with system in it, sorry, don't have that, but FYI, I have the fuel and smoke mounted side by side with bottoms facing each other. Gives you just a little more room. Oh, I run a TME smoke system and have a pinched smoke nozzle inside the muffler for a finer spray pattern. |

My set up is quite similar and the best part about putting smoke on my airwild edge 540 (dle55) is that the only weight I added was the weight of the 16 oz tank I put right beside the 24 oz fuel tank. I had 6 os of lead on the bottm of the motor box so I pulled it out and replaced it with a sullivan skywriter and a 450 ma 2 cell lipo mounted to the top of the smoke pump. no switch, I just plug the battery into the pump when its time to fly. No difference at all in the way that it flys except for the way cool smoke.
