Thanks for posting the great profile pics of the forward tube position. I think I like the looks of that better. But I haven't found any of the rear yet that clear. Maybe if I get some wood outta the back I will end up there with the DLE. I've yet to see the plane so I am not sure how much there is I can take out and I have never done that before. It will be interesting. I don't suppose you lightened yours any or have any pics with the covering off ?

Thats what I thought, but not sure. I have the splat design.
I have to say that I am very concerned about the weight. This is only my second giant scale. My first was a extra 260, it had the misfortune of meeting a pitts python in a mid air collision. Anyway, it seemed to be MUCH lighter than this cap. I know it's a good plane, I've seen it fly at Joe Nall several times. But comparing it to my other plane, Im not real sure. Kinda thinking about selling it before I fly it so it's not a used plane. |

I see no reason it would not fly just fine the way it is. A lot of folks are happy with it. I have been a Fan of Sensies lightening threads and since mine is coming with no covering and two fuses I just thought I would try my hand at it. Plus it would give me a longer to save up for the engine and gear. And I think I like the forward tube position better for that "Cap" look. I am no weight freak but if I can cut a pound or two off it while it is naked why not ? After I get and look it over I may not I don't know. I can always build both fuses. Besides you would probably have to take a substantial loss even it it were new unflown. I always weigh my planes just for what it is worth. My last third scale was an Extra 230 about 15 years ago and it weighed 24 lbs.

Thats about what my extra weighed. I think this will come in around 27 or 28. And that is trimming all the gear I can. I changed from nimh to lipo, that trimmed almost a pound. I added a power system and that brought some of the weight back.
Where do you fly? |

Currently just in my head ! Hah! I fly at the field at Tom Sawyer Park here in Louisville. And on some private land. My Club is River City Radio Controllers. I have not been able to fly as much as I thought I would this past year. Maybe that is why I have the "building bug" pretty bad right now. For me 27lbs would be a respectable weight. This plane is bigger than most if not all other 33% planes. I say that without checking but 100" is a tad more than 96/97" wings yes ? I would not consider stripping a new plane for any weight savings on 27lbs. Maybe after I wore it out and wanted to recover it. Or if I lived on a mountain with no Oxygen !

My club is in Asheville, NC. I too have not been flying much this year. I should have this plane ready to fly in the next several weeks. Looking forward to flying giant scale again. My helicopters just arent cutting it for me anymore.
I would not consider stripping the covering either. I think removing some of the balsa would not add up to much weight. dhawks has a nice looking set up. I am in the process of mounting my cowl right now. Thought about making a cowl ring so I dont have to see the screws on the side of the fuse. I am also having to extend my mufflers. They come right to the edge of the cowling. I guess I will cut the tubes of and weld on some new ones about an inch longer. The choke is in the worst possible place possible. It moves up and down right beside the muffler pipe. I will have to come up with some sort of linkage I guess. |

I have read the manual online and I note that Great Planes shows a DA 100 in the engine installation. Since the dimensions of a DA and A DLE are pretty close if not the same I am wondering if you had to cut the left (from pilots seat) lower cowl for the side edge of the muff ? As they did with the DA installation. DLE provides muffs and DA does not. So I kinda doubt they are the same. I'd hate to cut the front of my cowl for a muff. I'd rather cut the muff ! I'd have to have it welded back closed, I have no way to weld Aluminum.

I shortened my mufflers for my Extra. Now I need the extra length for my Cap. I did cut the front of my cowl for the muffler, it was not that big of hole. The muffler sticks out about 1/8 of an inch.
You can cut the muffler and have it welded at a local welding shop. I am a tool maker, so I do all of my own fab work and welding. If you cant find someone local, let me know. I will weld it for you. |

Thanks Dennis, I am building my first giant and started the 100cc eagle thread. I too think it is important to provide baffling for the engine not to mention the ease of on and off. I'll look for some pics.... Thanks. Jon |
