Default Flat vertical stab/rudder question.

I have an 87" Edge 540T. It has airfoil shaped horizontal stabs. But a flat vertical fin. Weird I Know!!! My question is should I brace it in any way? Maybe flying wires or something else?

No ones answered your question Paul so I will. It should be fine so long as the wood is good quality and well glued to the rest of the fuse. Some tests you can do are try the twist the fin left and right with the rudder attached and try moving the fin laterally (side to side) with one person holding the tail tube. This will give you a good idea of its strength.
The rudder will add considerable strength to the whole thing. Minor flex is a good thing as it displaces load.

Thank you. I wish more people would comment.

Yeah well forums usually have a way of being easily side tracked.

The flat fin should be fine unless it just feels weak and wobbly. IMO flying wires are only used to brace the horizontal flat stabs. You can always add them for peace of mind I guess, but I've never heard of a vert. stab breaking unless it hits something hard. Good luck with your new plane.

What ....your not happy with my answer!!!

LOL. Ok tell you what make another one about OIL or DA versus another brand ...... then you'll have many posts.

Seriously though the fin will actually increase with rigidity when the rudder moves left ot right......Kinda like an angle beam.

LOL, The oil thing. People are so set in there ways about some stuff. I do believe you are right. I just thought that there would be a heated debate about my rudder? Maybe we could badger back and forth a little. Just to make me feel better.

ROTF @ a heated debate....... Ya know plane makers should be shot for not making profiled fins its deplorable. I get so angry at the misuse of labor, time and materials on such a vital surface. A buddy of mine had the same model and the wings flew off because the fin wasnt lined up correctly with the fuel tank clunk...........Hows that ??
