Default 85cc motor on a 50-60cc plane

Does anyone have any experience hanging one of the new 80 or 85 cc motors on a 50-60cc plane? I thought about trying the 3W-85xi on an Aeroworks 50cc Edge 540. I don't have the guts to pull the trigger on this one yet, but wanted to get opinions. I've always oversized my glow planes, but this will be my first large gasser.

Thanks!

Not necessary, a quality lightweight 50-60cc motor will have plenty of power for any 50cc sized plane.

The plane will come out WAY nose heavy. If you want more power, run a tuned pipe.

Any recommendations on 50 or 60 cc engines? It seems like the 3W has a better power:weight ratio, but heavier overall. I saw that 3W has a dual plug option, but perhaps that is a waste of money for 50 cc planes.

Desert Aircraft, Evolution, DL engines, any of those would pull nicely 3w tends to be a little heavy and If your talking about the twin your going to notice more weight and less power. And as Stlav8r said if you need more power run a tuned pipe but the engine which I think has the most power in a different class is the Evolution 58gx2 pulls like crazy 24x10 6100 It also likes to pull at lower rpms. DLE-55 and Da-50 are the same thing I think a Dyno test was done on both of these and the DLE had like 0.2% more HP. Also depends what plane.

I was thinking an Edge 540, but perhaps a YAK. The Edge 540 will be a lot faster, and since I am stepping up to this type plane, perhaps slower is better. I don't know...I'm torn. I'll take a look at the EVO 58. Lots of questions from the gas newbie. Sorry.

If your gonna go with a 58 I would go with the MVVS. Not the Evo.

You may like to try this one . New MT80 80CC engine . engine weight only 1780g . even light than 3W55 and EVO58 . but 80CC capacity and lot more power then any 50CC engine .

It can be done but the plane must be strong and throttle management is EXTREMELY important.

Um well I have the 3W 85xi and putting that on a 50 will just ruin the flying characteristics no matter how much throttle management you use. But go ahead anyway........I like a laugh

I think a step up to giant scale is enough of an issue to learn on. No need to complicate it with worry about throttle management.

How are people's experience with that BME 58? It's a little lighter than the DA-50, but 6 HP instead of 5 HP. That's a significant difference. Is their quality good?

Don't go by HP numbers. They are a waste of time.

BME 58. Better machine work than my DA50 or DA85. Lighter, more powerful than the DA50 or DL50/55's and it is designed and built in the US. I do not believe there is a better option in power to weight ratio within the 50-60cc range.

And their customer service is equal to or maybe even better than DA. Frankly, it's faster.
