Bigger, stronger, more accurate servos are what we need. One per surface on a 40% airplane is, I think, ideal. Simple and light.

Eagerly awaiting more details.

As long as the aileron is stiff enough not to flex under load....

I agree. The reason for three servos on a 40% is to spread the pressure out over the whole surface.

If it was 600 oz/in at .13 or .14 at 6V, i would be super impressed...but for 200$...... IMHO I wonder what a standard 7955 would do if it was geared down slightly to .18 and the voltage cranked to 7.4v?

Let the servo wars begin.

Most definitely. A lot of 40%er's have gone from 3 aileron servos down to 2. One servo on an aileron of about 118" to a 123" wingspan plane is a lot of real estate for a single servo!

Yep. Servo speed is a little lacking but torque is impressive. With some of the fast-rolling stuff we do I think servo speed becomes a factor. 350-400oz.in and like .13 speed would be the BOMB!!!

Are they the same size as the Futaba 5050. I'm curious because I'm thinking about options for powering the Rudder on Bob's LW 55% / AeroTech Extra 260.

My options are:
  1. 2 7990TH Durant Direct Drive in Rudder if the plane will balance with the weight that far back
  2. 2) 7990TH in a SWB Tray Pull Pull
  3. 1) Seiko S-50 Servo
Thoughts?

Well the 7990th are only 10% bigger according to Mike. So if you were to sand the insides of the servo box walls installed in the plane i would think they would fit. If it was my new 55% I would go for the durant direct drive.

The 5050's are similar in size to our 7945 which are now pretty much delegated for 1:5th cars. We also have the new 5805MG which is even bigger.

The 7990 is just slightly larger than the current "standard" size servos but still offers over twice the torque of the big servos that are twice the weight.

Magnetic encoder modules offer non-contact alternative to potentiometers.

A picture of one is attached, not the same one used for servos, but basic principle.

Cool stuff Hitec!!!

Yes, it is possible that we could use them in standard sized servos in the future.

Here's a pic.
