My point is that you made it sound like a big chore and its no more effort than fueling the airplane or charging a battery, unless you cowl it in, but I can't see that happening at least for me because if I spend that kind of money you can bet it will be visible and accessible. You ever fly a bird where there is a distinctive change in power at every click of the stick? And sound that good?

MODE 1,

It was made out of plastic from a kit. I like it because it is a 3 dimensional engine instead of just the front half. I still need to put the exhaust stacks on all the cylinders. Here are a few pic's of my custom cowl being made by a couple in Austrailia. They are adding all the detail right into the fiberglass. The F4U-5N had a completely different cowl than the rest of the models as you will see. They are also making me the appropriate canopy for thia model. Plus I haven't ever seen a Corsair with the radial hanging out. That was kind of a mute point don't you think. This isn't a Stearman.

Yeah it was pointless thats why I didnt respond. And I feel sure no one would want to remove the cowl every session just to oil some rockers. Anyway its just a model there has to be some financial limits before you go too far buying the latest and greatest. The shear presence of the model will more than make up for the other engine options youve highlighted.

Your doing a great job there Barry. Keep them pictures coming.

One more thing. Are you planning on having a sliding canopy or permanently fixed? As a matter of fact just out of interest how far are you planning on taking the scale effect detail to?
I know it's early days yet. I built a little 100" Jug several years back, the panel lines, smoke, oil stains and rivets really consumed a great deal of time but the overall effect afterwards was very impressive.

Sweet.

Good luck on the build. I had a 93" that I recently sold. It was an awesome plane all around. Flew really, really scale with a G 62. Nose weight was necessary, but not as much as you think. BTW...that tail is gonna waggle like a puppy dogs.

My opionion, go with a 2 or 4 banger from 3W. The 170 or 220. There works of art that pull like a mule.

Well since I own Canopy Rails for Warbirds I guess I better wouldn't you say? I intend on going to as many events as I can within my budget and promote my rails and show them off in my Corsair. Here is my website: www.canopyrailsforwarbirds.com. I might make a bigger aluminum set for this plane so it looks even better than my standard rails. As far as detail, I plan on going all the way. I figured about a year just for the detail work. It will be weathered and battle worn when I'm done with her. The name of the Plane is "Annie-Mo" if interested Goggle search it and see what you find. She was Guy Bordelon's plane and he flew her in the Korean "POLICE WAR ACTION". This plane will probably have $10,000.00+ invested in her not counting time. Almost everything is custom made just for her. The fully detailed cockpit will be awesome when it's finished. There will be bezels on all the instruments made from glass. This will be backlit with a red LED. It will have all the functioning lights of the real McCoy.

I think that I would go with the 3w 210. If you work out the install you could probably hide most of the batteries for the plane up in the nose with the motor. The moki sounds cool, but they can be a pita.. And it sucks to spend half an hour taking of the prop and cowl of to oil the rockers.

2 walla,

I have decided to do exactly that. I was very impressed with the workmanship of my 3W 200 which got discontinued to make room for it's big brother the 210. I like the fact that it has dual electronic ignition similar to that of my full scale PA-28 140. The only difference is my full scale Piper is that it has magnetos instead of electronic ignitions. But they work pretty much the same. I love the security of a back up system. To many crashes are due to ignition or battery failure. I hope to receive my outer panels and aluminum spars so I can post more pic's as I try to finish the framing up of the wing.

Thanks for your input,

Barry

Amazing you should say that because it just so happens that I work with Mark Bordelon, Guy's son. He has a picture of his dad in front of his plane over his desk. I'll send him a link to this thread immediately. I'm sure he'll love it even though he doesn't fly RC. Looks just like his Dad.

I am positive that you will have a great powerplant in your choice. Super performance etc.

That said as I check my lotto numbers each time I get couple a huge Corsair with a radial engine in it is in the back of my mind !

In RC scale this is at the top the class you ask me. I'd gladly oil a few rockers before each flight just to hear that sound !

If I had a Corsair and could put any engine it I wanted I would not hesitate. I'd probably be trying to scale the bird to fit the bigger one.

Whose engine was it you posted the pic of with the 2 banks ? THAT is really getting there

Looking forward to your build, I hope you like taking pics.

When I get closer to the finishing of the build I will make an engine decision on how much weight I need. How about a 14 cylinder radial at 25lbs. I'll get weight, scale prop size, and divorced all at one time. Anybody have a spare garage area and bedroom when that happens. About the weight issue I would like to keep it under 75 lbs. with engine included.

You can come finish the airplane and live at my house if you get kicked out, I have plenty of space..

There is no end to this hobby.. WOW a 14cyl model engine..

It's glow, correct?

If it was me, I would put the 3W 210 on the front. It's not scale, or scale sounding, but it will be reliable, something you will want after all the work you are putting in. The DA-200 has a great sound to it..something to consider..

I've seen personally how temperamental the Moki radials can be, and they always seem to act up while in the air. They are great motors when they are tuned perfect and running perfect, but when there not, watch out.

The 14 cylinder is Gas!!! It is made by Seidel I think. It's 400 cc. If I still have the link I'll try to post some specs. I couldn't find the spec sheet but here are some more pic's of the engine and also the 3D view of the custom canopy I'm having made. Also a restored "Annie-Mo" so you can see the finished product if I decide not to weather it. I think either way it will look sweet. Let me know your opinions on finish. Should it be weathered or new? Shinny or flat?

Finish always adds more character to the model I think. Go to a show and you'll see mostly weathered birds. LOL I saw one with bullet holes down the fuse once .....looked good too.

How much would a 14 cylinder glow engine cost to run ........yikes

Specs - pulled from here - http://www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com/KnappCol.htm

56—Seidel ST 1426 14-Cylinder Radial Model Aircraft Engine, designed and built by Wolfgang Seidel, Germany, 2000. L=14", W=14", H=16", 31 lb 8 oz with display stand
Wolfgang Seidel custom designed and built several radial engines. The ST540, ST770 and ST996 were among the smaller series of radial engines that were used in one-fifth scale and one-fourth scale model aircraft. In the late 1990s, Seidel designed a larger series of radial engines that are commonly used in the larger one-quarter scale or smaller one-third scale model aircraft.
The ST1426 is the largest engine in the series, and perhaps the largest model airplane engine commercially sold. It is a 14-cylinder two-row 520cc (31.2 cubic inch) radial that is 14 inches in diameter, weighing 28 pounds and turning approximately 4,000 revolutions per minute.

Thanks Mokken for the video,
