Introduction

Highslide JS       Highslide JS

Building on their already impressive line of electric aircraft, 3D Hobbyshop has recently introduced 46" 3D/Precision Hybrid that they have names the "Vyper" that was designed by Scott Stoops. The Vyper is designed for use with 103-130gram outrunners and 3S Lipos and is designed for all out 3D flight as well as have the ability to draw straight lines for those precision flight junkies out there. After speaking with Ben from 3D Hobbyshop, I decided to build two different versions of the Vyper with different setups in order to compare and contrast the two and to see if in fact I preferred one setup over the other.

Out of the Box:

Highslide JS Highslide JS

As always, both airplanes arrived double boxed and protected from all the punishment that the shipping company may try to put them through. All parts were individually wrapped along with a fully hardware set that is 100% completely functional, fiberglass cowl and wheel pants, and also carbon fiber landing gear! After doing a quick parts inventory and inspection, it was time to get started on the build! Due to the high level of pre-fabrication on the 3D Hobby Shop Models, I was sure that assembly would be quick and painless.

Product Specifications

Wingspan - 46" Wing Area - 490 sq. inches Weight - 38-42 oz. depending on setup, lipoly pack Spinner - 40-42mm or 1.75"

Assembly:

For assembly of the first Vyper, I chose to go with the Omega 103g motor from 3DH, Hitec HS 65mg servos, Eflite ESC, and Futaba guidance and rudder control would be via pull-pull inside the fuse. For the second Vyper, it would be outfitted with the Omega 130g outrunner, HS65 Servos, EFlite ESC, and rudder control via push-pull in the rear with the fuse bottom mount location provided. Assembly started with removing covering from the various servo bays, wing tube, and stab locations on the fuse and wings. I always find it easiest and most clean to remove covering from these openings with a hot fine point soldering iron. It not only creates a nice, clean cut line, but also seals the covering to the wood where you have just created the opening.

Highslide JS Highslide JS Highslide JS

Once all the openings were made, it was on to hinging the ailerons (which were already slotted with hinges installed) that just required a few drops of thin CA and then the installation of the aileron control horns, aileron servos, and linkage. There are strings laid into the wings to pull your extensions through making it a quick and easy job, allowing you to have the wings completed in minutes.

Highslide JS Highslide JS Highslide JS Highslide JS

Once the wings were completed, it was on to mouting the horizontal and vertical stab, along with hinging the elevators, the rudder, and installing the control horns for each that were provided. At this point, I installed the elevator servo in the rear, and the rudder servo via push pull in the fuse. Bolted up the motor with the supplied, pre-installed blind nuts and bolts, strapped in the ESC to the motor box, installed the RX with a piece of double sided tape, and bolted up the carbon landing gear and voila, we were done! All in all, construction time from start to finish with taking pictures was just over 2.5 hours. One the second model, without stopping for photos, etc, the build process was completed in just a hair over 2 hours! A very quick build as everything is straight forward and well designed making it very easy for the modeler.

In the Air:

Now on to the fun part! Right from the get-go I decided I wanted to see what the Vyper was truly capable of, and whether or not it was actually a 3D/Precision Hybrid that was capable of unlimited performance in both flight realms. After a few test flights and shifting the battery to get the CG right where I wanted it, it was time to let loose! I hit the switches to my 3D rates and through everything I could think of at the Vyper. Blenders, walls, waterfalls, KE Spins, rolling harriers, RH Loops, Flat Spins, Parachutes, and KE Loops were all performed flawlessly by the Vyper. I immediately noticed the very minimal roll and pitch coupling with the rudder that was no doubt due to the design of the airframe and the cg location I chose. I actually beat on the airframe so badly that I actually stripped out my rudder servo in the process and had to go to my backup airplane to finish the flight review!
Highslide JS Highslide JS
After giving the Green Vyper a severe 3D Shakedown, I then proceeded to test the precision flight realm with the airplane. With the airframes ample side area, the Vyper flew on knifeedge very, very well. This made slow rolls, point rolls, and rolling circles very easy. Something I really enjoyed doing with the Vyper was slow speed, tight rolling circles, continually tightening them up to as small of a space as I could go. The Vyper tracked straight as an arrow given its somewhat long tail moment and positive and negative snaps were clean and crisp, starting and stopping where you wanted them to. All in all an excellent design that flew both precision and 3D Extremely well. Both versions of the airplane that I built had excellent power to weight ratio with 3S 2200mah batteries and I could not fault either setup! I was happy with both! I did like the push pull setup on the yellow version with the larger outrunner up front. It made the balance come out perfect on both airplanes by making one pull pull and one push-pull.

Conclusion

3D Hobbyshop and Scott Stoops have once again introduced another awesome airframe into their already fantastic line. They set out to create a precision/3D hybrid that was capable in both flight realms and they accomplished just that! The overall quality and construction was typical 3DH quality, something that I have come to expect from this company! If you are looking for something for a 3S battery pack that fits assembled in the back of your car yet has all out performance, pehaps the 3DH Vyper is exactly what you are looking for!

very nice review. The plane is solid in 3D and precision flight and practically lands on autopilot. I have been very happy with it and it was the first plane I could complete a rolling circle with. I can fly this plane in an area I had reserved only for talking up 40" planes and some foamies, yet it moves out at the club when it comes along on the weekends. Next to my Slick(s) this is always a "go to" plane. glad to see it got reviewed here

Thanks guys! Its a great little electric. I really like the way it tracks for precision manuevers, yet you can kick up the rates and really ring it out and it will take anything you throw at it.

Have you tried a 4s setup with the 130 with a 12x6 prop yet? Im curious with the 13x6.5 setup with the 103g 3s compared to the 4s setup.. Im gonna try the 3s setup first and see how it does but I love the 4s power on my velox.

I have 4S packs, but didnt try them. I was perfectly happy with the 3S, 25C packs with both the 103g and 130g motors and the prop combos I listed. Plenty of power in both applications with the 3S. I felt trying the 4S, while adding a ton of power that you really didnt need, would also add a lot of weight and change the overall performance of the aircraft.

Very nice flying and review John! I'm glad you included the few "mishaps" you had in the flight video. It's nice to know that even the top pilots like you have those every now and then when you're really pushing it!

Awsome flying in the video.

I'm debating which motor to get and wanted to see why you likeed the 130g motor with push\pull over the 103g motor and pull\pull?
