Andrew;

Congrats on your new toy and a successful maiden. With Krill taking the Tuscon Shoot Out in free style, and the nats, they will increase in popularity.

I love mine, made a few changes on it since Black Dirt contest, Jake flew it and made some suggestions and I incorporated them.

will do a few more this winter, mostly lose weight.

I'm looking into smaller batteries, 2700 instead of 4800, CF wing tube, lighten back plate, CF landing gear, lighten motor mount, and lighter wheels. CF landing gear will be almost 8 ounces. Batteries will be at least 6 onces, but I have to be careful as most of this weight is in front of CG, and the only option I have is to mount the rudder servos on the fuselage like Donnie did on his to counter all the weight shift.

Your comment about the canopy has been mentioned by several including the Katana owners. The Krill katana that Yuri built, and at the contest, had some locating pins to keep the canopy from flexing. One of the 33% guys lost his canopy due to the glue letting go on the phenolic mount. I cut out "their" glue and used Hysol. My canopy is smaller, and when I mount my dash and pilot, hope that the cross bracing of mounting them removes some of the flex.

noticed you didn't add the cuffs, and wondering why. Its been suggested by a good friend and unlimited pilot to lose them, as them may effect the tuck to the belly. Be interested in the amount of knife edge mixing you need.

When next seaon arrives, will have to do all trimming and mixes over, and then I let Jake put his seal of approval on it.

cheers

bob

How's it going Bob? Seeing your Sukhoi in the flesh helped push me towards it's bigger brother.

I reckon you're right to change the batteries - I'm running 2 x 4350 Thunder power Lipos for my RX, going un regulated to 8711HV servos and have plenty of capacity, so more capacity on a smaller plane is not all that necessary.

I moved the CG back today and the plane was better in both the sequence and way better in 3d. Put 6 flights on it and am loving it.

I played with the mix's a little more and ended up taking a little of the mix out. Strangely - moving the CG aft seems to have helped straighten things out. Currently I have 9% rudder elevator and 4% rudder aileron.
I left the cuffs off because I didn't really see the benefit. I know they add fus side area in front of the CG which might help in Knife edge but this thing has no problems in that area without them. It looks like they would just be something that could easily be out of alignment and generally end up being unhelpful.......!

I definitley have a bit of elevator flutter, so will be fitting the additional servos back there.

Wanted to get a bit of video but we had all the necessary except for a tape! Will try next time.

Morning Andrew:

Thanks for the comparison notes on the mixes. I have a little less in the rudder / elevator 6%, and 3% for the rudder / aileron. How much aileron differential?

With that said these numbers increased when I replaced the wood prop 27 x 10 with a CF one 28 x 10 that was 3 ounces heavier, and it demonstrates how the balance plays with the mixes, at least on this plane.

I initially set the plane up on a balance beam, and was not close, moved the 2 - 4800 ma batteries forward 16" after flying. I was also instructed to have 1 degree of up thrust, that I started with at 1/2 and removed afetr 3 flights.

A friend has a Krill Kantana, and he experenced a little flutter on his elevators as well. He also balanced the counter weight by adding to them. The additional servos will certainly help.

One note, if you hadn't heard, the ailerons have been known to tear on the hinge line, so they came up with a fix,
this is the link http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...l-yak55-8.html Its intended more for 3D flyers, but I don't think it can hurt regardless of yourintentions

I know that Jake liked the plane and the 3D possibilities of the design. I suspect our planes are favoring the 3D side of flying, but can fly IMAC as well as the pilot flying them.

Saturday looks like a possibility to get out one more time before it gets really cold.

cheers

bob

See you at the weekend Tom

Bob - I'm running 10% differential (JR).

With regard to the aileron mod - I should have mentioned the nice people @ Krill have started doing this as standard! I've attached a photo of the hinge the wings come installed with.

With reference to the CG and thrust lines - I'm also running 3 degrees of side thrust and 1 degree of up thrust and it seems very close if not spot on. Originally I planned to balance on the wing tube but after the install it was sitting in front of it and I just thought I'd fly it and see. Now it's further back - but still on the front edge of the tube.

How did you attach stab to fuse?

It's not marked but it didn't take long to trial fit the motor and mount. I found the centerline for mounting the motor was 17mm from the seam running down the motor dome. I seem to remember having a very small amount of downline mix and about 9% KE mix on JR.

There should be holes on the fus to mount the stabs. If there missing something has gone wrong. Then mount, drill and add blind nuts to the tube. I only use bolts on the rear tube.

can you send me a pic if possible of how yours came with the holes drilled for stab mount to the fuse please.

I'm a bit anal about the aileron horn geometry and rightly or wrongly work off the chord line to get the correct placement. As the wing atpers towards the tips it means a different measurement is used fo the outer servo bay compared to the inner. I used the same technique on the Yak and found the radio took very little set up to keep the linkage bind free through full travel.

After lots of time measuring the horns were glued with Hysol.

I then marked and cut the air vents in the bottom of the fus.
Did you have to move the horn back a ways to be over the hinge line my appears off quite a ways.

I removed material from the slots as they are supplied, to get the horns deeper into the surface and over the hinge line. They didn't drop straight into the slots as they come but it only took a few minutes to get them the way I wanted them.
