, I forgot to mention the DA 170 or the 8 high torque servos, oh yeah also the covering, the paint , all the tools the graphics.... ect ect. Hope she doesn't notice or I will have to put a pillow and a blanket on my build table.> No problem rich I spent the hole day painting a bathroom. Once they get you on 1 project it always snowballs. I'll call you tomorrow. > Craven - dont show your wife that avatar you got there. |

Subscribed. Just ordered a 300 on Friday and will follow a long with your efforts. I've built about 60 models, but all of them more than 20 years ago. Will be fun, tho!

Well thanks to Rich for getting me started he brought me a 12 inch drill press, a Table saw and a Scroll saw. He showed me how to get started with the cutting up the motor box. The combined weight of the 2 un-lightened sides was 21.6 ounces ( 10.8 a piece ). The two lightened sides weigh 12.6 Ounces total !
We started by getting the patterns which were provided by Tony based off of a build Done by Walt. Then we used a Forstner drill bit to drill out the corners and cut out the patterns with the scroll saw. A fair amount of hand sanding cleaned up the edges for a nice professional look. Here are some pics of me and Rich at work : Thanks again Rich you the man. I am going to continue work on the motor box tomorrow and shortly hope to start framing up the fuse. Good luck with your build. Looks like you are off to a good start. You will find it very rewarding when it takes to the air and you know it is by the work you have done. I will be keep an eye on your project.

Thanks Guys, I am really enjoying building so far. I like being able to control every aspect of construction. I like ARF's especially my extreme flight but there is no comparison to something you build yourself IMO. I am finishing up the motor box holes I will post pics in a bit.
Any questions let me know, any suggestions fire away ! Thanks Oh and my first recommendation for kit building - Don't kid your self get the right tools for the job. So far the scroll saw and Drill press are indispensable. If you are planning a build look around early for good deals. I got a tip from a friend at Lowes that some of there wood working tools are going on major sale on " Black Friday". Maybe a good time to stock up if you need some bench tools. |

I hear you about having the right tools. I'm fortunate to have a well equipt woodshop to build in. One of the really handy tools for my Carden build has been a Grizzly edge sander (which they don't seem to make anymore). However, if I was looking for one today I'd give this one a serious look: http://www.homedepot.com/Tools-Hardw...atalogId=10053
Keep the pics coming. Jim |

Okay here is the finished motor box except for the firewall, I will lighten that once I have the SWB motor mount in place. Most likely I will loose an ounce maybe 2 cutting the hole in the firewall. Here is the summary:
Un lightened : TOTAL = 3 lbs 2.2 ounce Lightened : Total ( see pic ) 2 lbs 1.6 Ounce Weight Loss = 1 lbs 0.6 ounces !! WOW That rocks ! So tomorrow I will try to get started on the Fuse Sides, I have to get some epoxy to glue the motor box I don't have any good quality stuff here. Also you can see how I matched the formers after they were rough cut out. I clamped them together and carefully sanded until they were identical. I want to make sure the lateral balance of the plane is correct. I know this is a bit anal but thats how I am hopefully it will pay off. Last edited by crash-n-burn; 11-14-2009 at 01:32 AM. |
