Many years ago I built 2 eagle 2 trainers from a wood kit. I built a Sig Kobra also. Since I have "built" 2 50 cc ARF's also my friend trashed his 50 cc extra and I basically rebuilt and recovered it, it came out great. That is the extent of my experience. Other than that I can fix most things if I just try to think it through. Basically I was where your are, I always wanted a Carden but knew that the only way I would get one is to build it myself. I figured I can probably pull it off. I have gotten a lot of help on FG which has been great. Also Rich Mowrey a builder in Saint Louis has taken a lot of his time to help me get started. I would recommend going through the Carden build threads on FG and other places they are a huge help. here are some of my favorites : http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_48..._1/key_/tm.htm http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...html#post75245 http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...tml#post411047 http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_34..._1/key_/tm.htm http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/192906-post201.html http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...ld-thread.html http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...ing-table.html http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...-mid-wing.html http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_64..._9/key_/tm.htm This thread By GARETH.KY documented his first Carden build it is excellent and really made me feel like I could pull this off i highly recommend reading this thread http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...ld-carden.html Good luck dude just go for it and ask lots of questions ! ![]() This is specifically for this plane by Walt its really good also http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/f...prototype.html |

hey guys sorry for the delay i will have some stuff to post shortly. Have the family coming in for thanksgiving and the wife has me running around like her personal handyman. Anyway quick question; to mount a DA 150 or 170 with the SWB mount, what is the mounts orientation on the firewall ? I already have the center and 2.5 degrees offset done please take a look at the pics and tell me which orientation is correct. thanks.
The pics are "SWB logo UP" or " SWB logo to the right " Thanks |

The verticle is longer/horizontal shorter. The verticle is 3.550" and horizontal is 3.150".

Dan, facing the fire wall as your looking at it in the picture, the longer mounting studs will be longer on the right vertical and shorter on the left of mount for 2.50 degree right offset. After that you have to compensate for the offset and length of motor from base to spinner shaft. You will need to move the mount to the right about 3mm to compensate for the offset, this puts spinner backplate and shaft back in center of box. Dan I'm sorry, I missed the call and left my phone at the house. I have a recover/paint on a Carden 40% 260 that needs started. Can you call me later today. We have Lexy tonight for awhile It's Monday.

To add to what Rich has already said, it looks to me like you need to rotate the firewall 180 degrees (right picture) to get the offset line to the right of the center line.

Jim T I see how your looking at the fire wall.... Dan the fire wall in right photo looks correct how it would be installed... Jim... Yes 180 rotate / Dan what is going on in the picture on the right is... The Vertical line Dan needs put back in center. Then the new offset line will be moved to right of that center line, as you have the offset line shown in photo to the left as it looks. That's why the 180 Degree rotate. Also looks as I and Jim can see the old center line. And get rid of old outline tracing of mount. May Lead to confusion. We may have talked of this on the phone yesterday. I need to bring you the sander. also give you a load of acid brushes and I have a ton of Alcohol pads. You need the wood square it's light for Clamping the Box, also helps holds square, some scrap strips of hardwood also to clamp up box. You have the Adjustable Hole saw already there. Do you need any fill 1/8" ply I need to bring over. Don't buy any Dan. I have plenty of scrap for what you need.

Ugh sorry guys I have been getting killed at work lately but I have been able to get some work done so here we go.
Fuse trusses : I got the fuse socket supports for the wing and the stab lightened and glued into place. You have to remember that the sockets go on the inside of the truss. You need to build 1 on top of the plans and the second must be its mirror image. That way you end up with a tight and a left fuse half and not 2 rights or 2 lefts. I took a good deal of time to line things up correctly here is what i did. - marked the outside of both trusses so I would not get confused - put the first truss over the plans and made sure everything was lined up perfectly. - I used t-pins in balsa blocks butting up against the truss to hole it in place. - Place the wing socket support over its position on the plans. - pin in into place and put the wing tube through the support - Set the tube 90degrees to the truss side and look closely where the tube lined up on the plans - Make sure that the outer diameter of the wing tube support lines up with the plans - Glue in place and check it like 10 million times as it dries. For the other truss half things were a bit different, - To get a right and a left side you need to make sure that to put the socket supports on opposite sides - Place the socket support on the plans, line up the hole for the wing tube perfectly - Put the second truss over the plans and make sure it is correctly lined up at either end of the plans so the socket ends up in the correct place. - Use balsa scrap and t-pins to hole the truss in place but still allowing it to be removable - Check alignment a million times - Remove the truss place glue on the socked support - Re-insert the truss into the jig you jest made and secure it so it wont move - Place 10 or so lbs of weight on the truss over the socked to ensure good adhesion - check alignment again For the socket supports on the horizontal stab it was basically the same with a few additions - I wanted to ensure that the stab tube would be dead square but you can see the plans when gluing the stab tube socket support - To visualize where the plans line up with the stab tube i used a flash light that was able to illuminate the plans - I placed the stab tube in the socket support and looked down it you can see exactly where it lines up on the plans - Adjust stab socket until the tube lines up dead nuts - repeat for the other side but keep in mind you will need to pin the socket support to the plans on this one so you end up with a right and a left fuse. > Also once I had glued a side and before I glued the next I would put the finished truss over the one I was working on and check tube alignment to make sure it was coming out square. Also I wanted to make sure that the fuse socket supports were in the exact same place on the fuse so the wing tube would be square. here are some pics of what I just described, for seasoned builders its kinda dumb but for rookies its all in the details. This was my method it worked for me, if it helps you use it.
