All I use is 8611s ir 8711s in my gas planes...I currently have 31 of them, mostly 8611s....no problems whatsoever.
I have had an additional ~15 or so that I have since sold along with the planes they were in...and no bad experiences.
JR's service is top notch..I usually send my servos in after ~2-3years(depending on the flight count) for new gear sets....always has been free of charge too...even return shipped back to me at no charge.

I haven't heard of any jamming at all.....keep in mind that I am sure there is somebody out there who after they crashed their plane(or other abuse), then went ahead to reuse the servo without checking it properly....that may have caused issues. If someone was silly enough to do that....they probably wouldn't admit fault either.

Yeah, I figure something is jammed in the teeth. Just curious if anyone else had any similar problem.

Ther servo came out of a crashed QQ YAK rudder setup (dual 8611's), but nothing behind the canopy was damaged in the crash and the servo was working fine.

It is now in a replacement QQ YAK and appeared to be operating perfectly in the new .setup.

But on the second flight of the new YAK, it came damn near costing me the plane.

However, all's well that ends well.

Ill take the plane out of my truck this afternoon and get to the bottom of this. Unfortunately, this plane will have to wait for next season to be flown again.

the sudden impact jammed up the servo and broke a tooth or rod. i had this happen on a crashed plane that the surface was untouched.

I have had two do that recently. Both were from a broken tooth on the first gear which meshes with the little gear on the output shaft of the motor. The motor relies on speed not power and it only takes a tiny bit of plastic to jam it. You can buy just that gear for less than five dollars and it is a easy fix. Mine probably were damaged by a particularly violent full power snap while inadvertently on high rates. One was jammed and the other just made a ratcheting noise.

Actually, the gearset is $36.

I think there's a lesson here about not re-using crashed equipment until it's been fully inspected and found free of damage. Moving the sticks back and forth a couple of times is not much of an inspection.

You are correct on the gear set. I had Larry from Chief order me just the offending gear. As I remember they were less than 5$ each.

Generally, any servos that are in a crash I test end to end under pressure to feel for broken or "notchy" or rough operation. No way to tell if any internals are about to fail even by eyeballing it

Well, I opened it up this afternoon and it doesnt look like any of the gears are broken or binding.

I believe the motor is actually "bound", but rather than take it all apart Ill send it back and have JR fix it. Maybe Im missing something.

Ira, this happened to me Twice, it would freeze in one spot without power but when I turn the radio on it works fine, didn't last long before it completely seized, I ended up sending about 30 servos to Horizon for inspection.

Snap,

And what did Horizon tell you the problem was.

After I examined the servo gears yesterday, all looks good. But I think the motor must be seized. Servo wont move with or without power and I believe the electronics are shot as the servo does not appear to be drawing any current at all.

IRA,
I had the same problem with one of two aileron servos. The good one was trying to help the bad one. Without power you couldn't move it by hand. Just send it in before something bad happens.

Almost sounds like one of the gear pin sockets is broken...... I have seen them break out on 2721's, 8411's, 8611's. JR upgraded the upper servo case to a brass insert, instead of the plastic.

In my case, I couldn't move the servo PERIOD, power or no power........

I will get everything back sometime this week, some servos needed motors some needed gears others needed a case, all kind of issues.
