Default Dietrich Customer Service - Mintor 220

I recently purchased a beautiful Mintor 220 from Dietrich Aircraft and I understand I`m the first in Canada with one. This is probably the most beautiful engine I`ve ever seen and the pictures don`t do justice - a true masterpeice of machining!!

I know that Dietrich Aircraft is now distributing Mintor motors and I thought this would be a great forum to promote their customer service as everyone follows this situation that I`m about to explain!

Due to some unforeseen circumstances during shipping I noticed the following three things wrong yesterday when I received it:
1) One of the connectors for the ignition sensor wire is missing - looks like it was cut off
2) One of the machined carburator horns was squashed
3) One of the motor mount lugs is bent and cracked (means a whole new crankcase).

The box seemed to be in good condition and Kevin Dietrich seemed to have it packed well, but it looks to me like the motor took a pretty significant fall and caused Item 1, 2 and 3.

I called Bill at Dietrich immediately and Kevin Dietrich called me back within a few minutes... Kevin is going to place a damage claim with FedEx soon and Kevin will send me a new Mintor 220.

Here`s a great way to promote Dietrich`s customer service:

Due to an upcoming competition, I need the new motor by Dec 2nd. Kevin tells me that he has already ordered another Mintor 220 and it will be shipped within 2-3 business days from Italy (so Nov 12-13) and he`ll have me a new motor within a couple weeks.

I`ll keep everyone in the loop on the level of customer service with Dietrich.

Cheers

Trevor Brum

Customs randomly opens packages and inspects them. They tear up alot of stuff.

is the DA200 really that much longer, or is it just the angle the picture was taken?

thanks

Yep... it`s that much longer!! The Mintor 220 is only 1/4" longer than a DA150 or DA170!!!

Have you weighed both engines? Curious which is heavier. Very perdy engines though.

Whoever handled this package must have used it as a football a bit to bend that motor mount

Kevin has been in touch with me today and is in the process of starting the damage claim with FedEx! So far Kevin's follow-up is awesome!

Here are some pictures that compare my Mintor 220 with headers and Mintor canisters to my buddy's new DA200 with 2-into-1 headers and KS cans...

Mintor 220 with matching cans and headers:
Motor: 10lb, 15.6oz
Ignitions: 15oz
Headers: 13oz
Cans: 1lb, 8.8oz
Total: 228.4oz (14lb, 4.4oz)

DA200 with 2-into-1 headers and KS cans:
Motor: 10lb, 15.8oz
Ignitions: 10.8oz
Headers: 14.7oz
Cans: 1lb, 12.2oz
Total: 229.5oz (14lb, 5.5oz)

Therefore, these two motors are extremely close in weight!!!

The fact that the Mintor is shorter and has lighter cans, means that the Mintor will make the same plane more nose heavy because it's CG is farther forward.

Man that is a gorgeous looking piece of machinery.
So Fed Ex may take the hit for what very well may have been mis-handling by a customs inspector? That is a sad scenario for everyone- especially the spineless inspector. The frustration could be unbearable if you let it.
Three cheers to Kevin Dietrich for minimizing your anguish and predicament.

Wouldn't a longer motor make a plane more nose heavy

Regardless of the motor length, the hub flanges still have to be at the same position so that the prop and spinner clears the cowl.

Therefore a shorter motor means the center of mass is closer to the spinner (or farther forward from the CG), so it will make the plane more nose heavy

Yep... the nicest looking machining I've ever seen in my life. The time and attention put into the polishing is also something to be appreciated!

We'll see how Kevin does with the FedEx claim! The motor was sent to an address in New York, so it stayed withing the Continental US and therefore no customs inspector would have touched it (I went down to New York and picked it up at a depot and brought it back across the border myself).

Therefore, it's pretty safe to say that it was a problem with FedEx.

Here's hoping that Kevin can get a replacement for me in a couple weeks as he mentioned to me!!!

You should have opened it at the Fedex depot. When I go across the line or any shipper for that matter, I open it and have quick look there. It is alot easier to prove them at fault before you take it home and open it. Good luck with the claim.
